Molly needs the works... lots of questions

I got a number to a low cost spaying clinic (like 25 dollars to get her spayed) something don't settle right w/ me doing that. I would rather take her to a local vet (one that we take our cat to, and mom her bunny).

She is 10 weeks old, so I am thinking she is do for a load of shots, she has already been wormed. I hear that you can get them fixed a alot younger now, any advice?

I also want to have her tail docked (she is a jack russell mix, and is mostly jack). I remember doing the mini pins when we bred them, pretty young too...

So for all of this, any tips? She is def going to be the baby of the family and want her to be in tip top shape ( I don't do well w/ loosing pets the last fish that died I cried for 4 hours on and off about it, and was tore up for a week)

I have never used the low cost spay/neuter clinics. I have always taken my animals to my vet. She is definetly due for a lot of shots if she is 10 weeks old and has't had any yet. She will need Rabies, Bordatella, and Distemper/Parvo for sure (I don't know if I spelled those right). I would also make sure that you definetly get pain medicine for her from the vet after she is spayed. It is really painful for girls, and my girl cocker spaniel was miserable after she was spayed. The boys have it easier. You can take or leave the following advice, but I would not get her tail docked. It is an extremely painful procedure and in my opinion it us unfair to put the animal through that just for cosmetic reasons. She may be to old for it at this point, I'm not sure. My sister is a veterinary technician and has had to assist with the procedure many times. She says that the vet that she works for gets very upset whenever she has to do a tail dock. I won't go into the details of it because it is a little to graphic for this forum, but I would definetly research the process before you do it.

Where do I start lol...

She is way too old to have her tail docked..It is very hard on puppies having their tails docked past the age of 5 days...I dock tails on litters all the time and I NEVER do it past the age of 5 days old...Even if you are lucky enough to find a Vet that will do this it will be very expensive at this age....

If I remember correctly you are a nurse? I know you work at the hospital just not sure what you title is..If you are an RN there is no reason you can't do the vaccines yourself...All it is is a sub-cu injection...It will cost you less than $4.00 a shot of you buy them online...I give DHPPC I do not give Lepto...I inject every 3 weeks starting at 8 weeks ending when they are 20 weeks and giving a booster at 1 year continuing with an anual booster yearly..

As far as spaying her I feel that 6 months is the perfect age..It is before she goes into season but gives her body time to mature...I wouldn't worry about taking her to a low cost clinic...We have had 100's of rescues done through those clinics and they have a great deal of experience...It's all a personal choice I suppose..You are most likely looking at a price difference of at least $100.00 doing it at a private Vet...

I hope this info helps...Good luck!

One more thing I forgot...Her rabies vaccine will have to be done by a Vet..This one you can't do yourself...Usually the animal shelter has a clinic that does them at a lower cost...As far as Bordetella which is the kennel cough vaccine it is really not that necessary unless you plan on boarding her in a kennel...This is a vaccine that is given in the membranes of the nose...

Thank you so much, I was worried about the tail docking, my mother was the one who suggested it, we won't be getting it done.

I have thought of doing our own shots, my husband and I are both qualified to do that. (I am an RRT, resp therapist however I have given shots before, and take blood on a daily basis) Then my husband is a critical care paramedic, I know he can give shots, hes gave me a shot everyday this week of steroids to help me breathe.

I was also thinking that 6 mths would be a good age for spaying her, the places around here do it at like 16 weeks, seems way to young.
