| | Fish Helper | long, and narrow floor hugging fish tank??
Hello,
I'm just wondering if anyone has ever heard of a long, and narrow fish tank, that isn't very high from the ground. The dimenions would be like; 9" wide, 9" hight, and maybe like twenty feet long, if that makes sense. I was thinking of it being something that can be a large ### gallon wise, but something that won't be extremely heavy in one place, and crash through my apartment floor. So I'm envisioning a long and narrow fish tank this is long and floor hugging. Something that doesn't take up too much size width wide, but still spacious....

the size you mention would be approx 85g. The problem I see is the long solid pieces of glass.

| | Fish Helper | yeah, i think so.... i'm looking based on their design, not their idea of keeping those kind of fish all in one spot, lol |

Thoughts | Sorry to be overly pessimistic, but I'd have some pretty serious concerns about the practicality of a design like that.
As Carol and Ken pointed out, a piece of glass 20' long that can support the pressures of an aquarium would likely be quite expensive (and thick), and you'd need two of them. Once the tank was assembled at the manufacturer, how would you get it into place? Unless your apartment is on the ground floor and it's a straight shot from the parking lot to your door to the tank's resting location, most apartments and homes don't have stairwells/elevators/corners wide enough for a 20' non-flexible object to go in or around them, let alone the object and the people that would be necessary to carry it safely.
Then, assuming you managed to afford, procure, and position a tank like that, how would you do maintenance on a tank with those dimensions that's on the floor? Assuming you only change 20% of the water per week, that's still close to 20 gallons each week. Since no one in their right mind would want to remove 20 gallons of water a cupful at a time every week, you'd need some way to get the water out. Most people use siphons of some sort, but siphons generally require the draining point to be lower than the source point. If this tank were on the floor, you'd have to have a siphon drain below the floor to remove water. You could use a submersible pump to push water out, but that doesn't help with substrate vacuuming unless you get extremely creative and build a vacuum attachment for a submersible pump.
The design may be feasible, but there are an awful lot of things to consider first. |

| | Fish Keeper | Can you find any long acrylic tanks? I don't like the tube tanks, wheres the filtration and the heater? I see a tubing line coming out, is that the connection to the sump? Those pipes should be for gerbils and not fish... |

| | Fish Bum | not to hijack the thread but this tube thing gave me an idea of how we could set up our 3 tanks. W wanted to do each one a little higher than the other and somehow filter the water through each so that it looked like a waterfall going between them... the clear pipes would be awesome for that (with screens on the ends so no fishies could get through) |

| | Moderator | Good morning. Too, placement would be everything! I actually had to build my fish room around my fish tank with dimensions of 84x25x30. There was no way to finagle it where I wanted it to go. So I had to have the aquarium in place before the room was completed. Something to think about should you venture into having a custom tank.

thx every1 | Even though you broke up the sides of the tank into smaller pieces you are still going to have a very large piece of glass on the bottom. What was your idea for a hood? Are you going to build a custom one? |

|
| | Fish Helper | I was planning for the bottom to be plywood with titles over it, or small glass pieces over a liner or something... for hood i was going to use those thin plastic grate things.... i was thinking that i might cut the dimensions in half
bradisfun... if you have any questions, feel free to ask them, im sure it would only help with my concept, and a picture of that piece from your bed would be great |

I know that when designing walls in bathrooms with tiles on it you need some kind of backer board like moisture resistant sheet rock. |

Hopefully your home depot is helpful because the one by me is horrible. Last time I went in I asked the guy where the drills are and he said follow me he went around to the next isle and started eating a pretzel and was wondering why I was standing next to him. Hope it all works out for you. |
