Refinishing a tank and stand

Well I'm going to whip my 65 gal into shape but that unfortunately will require a bit of TLC. The glass and seams etc are good on the tank but the tanks metal frame was originally alluminum it looks like, which was then repainted goldish to match the brass colored metal stand. The wood has seen better days. I was thinking that I could just strip the flaking paint off it and repaint it but would I need to look into spray paint of some special paint?

Didn't have any, however I got a whole bunch yesterday and I'll upload them when I get back home This refinishing thing may take longer then I thought... I need to tinker with the hood and lights...

EDIT: Alright we'll try the pics again after another round of resizing...

Ok the pics are up but now I need to ask you guys a question. What color do I re-paint it? Black, Brass, Silver, or something else?

I'm thinking that I'd like to repaint the cabinet too but I'm not 100% sure yet.

I vote black, but I am by no means and interior decorator. Black is elegant and it goes with everything

I love the patterns on the front, btw.

I would go with gloss black too and if you decide to paint the wood you can do it on like Red Mahogani and drop a lot of Poly on it will Look awesome.

I don't know what the rest of your decor is like but Rustoleom makes a awesome spray paint called hammered brown. I'm addicted to it.

Some really good suggestions above. I'd like to see you keep all of the wood with a wood finish on it and not paint it. I think a high gloss black would look nice for all of the trim as do some of the above posters. Every room could use at leas 1 piece of black furniture, even if it's a ceiling fan, chair, rug. (fish tank trimmed in black )

Hmm... so the consensus seems to be black which I was kinda leaning towards . I wouldn't mind saving the wood so I'll look into it. Does anyone know what I'd need to repair the wood damage? I was thinking that there might be a finishing tape of some sort...

You can remove the rest of it and use some veneer tape, but you may need to match the color of the wood or refinish the whole thing.
