I think the word "canopy" in the article you found was a somewhat poor choice, as different people mean different things when they say canopy or hood. Whatever structure your bulbs are mounted in, whether you call it a canopy, hood, fixture, or
lighting thingy, you can paint the inside of that flat white for an inexpensive improvement in lighting.
As far as the illustration board idea, it might work, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone try it.
