new tank

I'm getting ready to move in to my new house. I have a 40 gallon saltwater tank now. My wife works at a glass shop and the owner offered to build me a new tank for free. Well not free, I have to build him a cabinet for his. He will make it out of 1/2" glass. I want it 48x24x24. My question is should he drill the overflow holes in the bottom or the back of the tank??

Good morning Papap. In my 155g my overflow holes are drilled into the bottom of the tank. For my new 240g I'm not getting the built in overflow instead I'm going to use the HOB overflow box. It's very difficult to crawl under the tank to do plumbing with holes drilled in the bottom (I'm not getting any younger ;0)). Luckily, I've only had to crawl under it once in the past 10 years to replace a leaky hose. Using the HOB overflow box will eliminate that problem. Good luck and hope you can share some pictures once you're all set up!

I have the HOB type now and you have to have a pump to keep the air out of it. I was hoping to get away from using that type of overflow. Do you have any picture of how you overflow is set up with the hole in the bottom?

I used an HOB overflow on my 72g when it was up and running and never had a problem. I didn't have to use any additional pumps other than the mag drive that sits in the tide pool. I'm sorry I don't have any pics of the works. It has 2 holes drilled in each corner, on the bottom. One for intake and one for return, each side.
