| | Fish Lore Newbie | I like it. What size tanks will it hold? And it may be just me, but I would just put several coats of polyurethane on it and go with the natural wood.
I have several tanks and have pondered building something like this. |

| | Fish Mentor | Love the wood. A nice stain and bit of lacquer and is a show piece. |

| | Moderator | Nice job. I'm with NavyScuba and would love to see it finished in stain. I have a black stand now holding my 155g. I'm switching to a light stain for my new 240g. Just a preference |

| | Fish Bum | You have my vote on flat black! I feel it will make the tanks stand out more.
Have you thought about installing some mirrors beside the side of the tanks on the bottom that are facing inward? It would give you a view of the bottom tanks from different angles, and clean up any views of the inside of the structure.
Great job on the build! Soon you will be able to sit back and enjoy! I am looking forward to the finished product! Are you installing a DIY lighting system in the unit for the bottom tanks? Moon lights? Just in case you are, I recently bought a power bar timer (3 prong) that has 4 individual timer outlets on it, and 4 direct power outlets ($14.99 at the Home Depot) and it works beautifully. 4 spots for timed lights, (have your moon lights turn on as the mains turn off) and 4 for filter/heater/air/. If you bought 2 of them you would never have to reach under the canopy's to turn the lights on and off, they could all run on their own schedule that you have programed in. Its also nice to just hit a switch when cleaning to turn everything off at once.
Again, great job on the build! Cheers! |

Again, great job on the build! Cheers! | yeah the real reason im choosing flat black is because i wanted to spend as little on wood as i could.... so its a mixed range of wood types and grain quality..... if i stained it the pine would stain dark and flat, birch would sheen and finish light and so on.... plus the few knots and such required some apoxy compound and sanding so it would show through the stain..... but if i had the mony to buy all high end pine i would have stained it 3 coats of cherry then a final coat of mohagany with a coat of poly!! ....
im building into the cabinet a GFI power center.... 2 actually, one for filters and pumps ect with its own on\off, and the second for lights.... for the lights im going to set up a central timer and on\off for all 4 tanks with settings for a 14hr full cycle and 10hr lunar cycle, the full cycle will be broken into 4 phazes, first phaze, 2hrs will be dawn (very low light 0.5wpg), middle phaze, 10hrs will be normal day (high light 3-4wpg), secondary middle phaze, 2hrs *hrs 5-6 in middle phaze* will be high noon (very high light 5wpg), final phaze, 2hrs will be dusk (very low light 0.5wpg), these will carry through on all 4 only if i decide they will all be planted tanks.... full diy hoods.... ballast and 4pin setups is what im leaning to.... found some current 2x65watt ballast for under $30.... as of now all the specifics are theory untill i delve into it, things may change or become more ridiculously overdone!! lol
and thanks for the great comments!!! |

| | Fish Bum | Very Cool! Looks strong. What size tanks are ya putting in? I made something similar years ago that held 4 tanks , 20gallon high ,18g high and 2 10gallong on the bottom, but it wasn't as nice as your stand, mine was all 2 X 4's and setup in the basement just for breeding angels and albino catfish, now it's my circular saw table, d'oh!
Did ya follow any plans for this stand? If so can ya post it?

| | Fish Keeper | That is a sweet set up! The tanks will look great.
Minor critique only if its ok....if not tell me to shut the heck up.
I would paint the hinges and hooks. Or eliminate the hook and find a way to hold it up from behind. Vey nitpicky as it really is a nice set up. Thanks for sharing, I love a nice project like this!
Any plans for a matching canopy on the top? |
