DYI external filter

Hi!

I am planning to make an external filter for my 10 G aquarium. I plan on using the same kind of construction for a 100G pond.

1. My plan is to draw water from aquarium through a drilled inlet pipe so as not to suck fish.
2. Filter it through sand first, then sponge, both in single 2G container.
3. Suck through powerhead in another .5G bottle and pump back into aquarium.
4. Use a PVC pipe of enough length with 2 rows of drilled holed pointing downwards to put water back to aquarium above water level, to avoid strong water currents

This way I can keep dirt away from the powerhead.

Please let me know if this filter might work. I have options of 100GPH to 220GPH powerheads.
I can use varying amounts of sand to regulate the water flow.
Can add another container if required.

What kind of a filter is this? (Canister etc...)

Attaching a picture of the same construction plan.

I am concerned about anaerobic pockets in the sand as well as clogging probabilities.

What about a small DIY HOB Wet/Dry filter? I draw this sketch. It uses a DIY PVC Overflow (the air check valve that goes in it is not shown), a small pump, bio-ceramic media and two sponges.

Hope it can help you work out your idea.

50% okay. But, how can you clean it once clogged with gunk & stuff? it's like a standing overhead power filter. My filters can be cleaned by replacing the filter media one at a time while it's running.

i would move the water inlet to the top of the 2G container and move the outlet to the bottom/side of the 2G container. lose the sand idea, replace it with ceramic rings for biological filtering. have the water come into the top of the filter, hitting your sponge first, then flowing through it into you ceramic rings, then reached your powerhead that pushed it back to the tank.

If the medium gets clogged with stuff, the sand can be removed and washed or cleaned with backflow of water.

1. I think having the sand before the sponge would filter large debris and let the sponge filter finer ones.
2. I couldn't find any ceramic rings or bio filter medium as here in India we do not have big sophisticated stored like petsmart etc.

I use crushed lava rock in my Rena filter. It came with bio-stars but I've found them very expensive to replace. I just crush it up (not to fine) rinse it off and put it in a *fish net stocking* It works wonderfully!!
I wouldn't use sand. I'd worry about gas build up.
