DIY glass top.

I just created my glass top today for my 33g tank. Took me about an hour total to complete....but I was also cooking/eating some BBQ and enjoying some cold Sleeman while I was working away in the sun. Have to love spring!

This was a simple and cost effecting way to achieve a glass top. This took me a while to scrounge up all the material (or should I say scavenge) but now that it is complete, I think it was totally worth it.

The acrylic pieces I found in the recycling outside a store. They has gum stickers across them. Brought them home, took the stickers off and cleaned them up. Free is a great price.

The glass is from a closed hair salon in a local mall. It was used as a shelf. I asked if I could have it, which they said I could have all of them (4 total) Again....free. It is amazing what you can get if you just ask.

The glass was a bit short for the tank though. So I cut the acrylic to fill in the sides to hold the glass up. I originally wanted to make some caves out of the acrylic....but this seemed to be a great use for it.

So cut 3 pieces for each side to level the sides with the top of the tank, and placed the glass on top! Taa Daa!! Just saved myself $60! Hope this helps someone out that has the same kind of budget I have! Cheers!

Nice job Reid. I just love DIY especially when the finished product looks as good as what you could buy. Looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks guys! I'm not 100%, but I might be putting on hinges on the glass. I originally wanted to change the glass every water change so it never gets the chance to get to stained with water marks or algae , (since they gave me 4 pieces) but now I am thinking about putting hinges on one piece and only changing them every couple of months so my girlfriend wont complain about lifting the glass off to feed the fish....lol

Wait until you see what I got for lighting for this 33g. I am tearing it apart right now and re wiring the ballasts. Should be up in a week or so, if I have the time.

Thanks again for the kind words! Cheers!
