with ideas i got from people in the forum i made my own penguin an emperor filter cartridges reusing the plastic of the original filters, Marineland filter pad or filter fiber,bridal netting that my mother in law measured out cut and sewed in to a perfect pocket that holds the pad or fiber tight together to the plastic keeping the filter media snug in the plastic.tried them and they work great.

that's awesome. i've been cutting up my cartridges to remove the carbon but it's pretty messy and hard to get rid of everything.

I just threw mine out and bought four pieces of foam to put in mine. I stuck them in there sideways and viola. You can do the same thing with the sponges. pretty nice to because you never really need to throw them away or do anything besides wash them in tank water when they get real dirty. Of course I let my get pretty dirty from time to time just for extra bacteria build up. And since I often use that filter for extra media to sit in before I add to a new tank to instant cycle it always works out well.
