so here are some pics of the sump tank that i built. this is a " practice sump" that will be used as a model for the one that i build for the 55 gal that i will be setting up sooner or later. thanks to all who helped with suggestions to get me to this finished project. kinda... i still need to finish the stand so that i can set it up ,

oh yeah, the sump will be trialed with my ten gal tank, i know its way overkill of a setup, but i figured starting small = less epensive mistakes and a good blue print for the bigger system that i will be bulding in the future. also the pic of the PVC overflow is just hanging over the side of the sump tank to be displayed.

Did you use glass or acrylic for the division pieces?

One thing that confuses me a bit is the T section on the vent tube... If your intake (lower T) gets clogged water is likely to go out from that extra T. I like the stability it provides in terms of support but I would place a cap to close that hole and extend the vent above the superior inverted U, just in case.

Clean piece of work you got there, congratulations. You could use that filter in a 30gal easily.

the dividers are made of acrylic, i bought a sheet of it at my local hardware store and cut the to fit. the tee on the top of the vent was my attempt to cut down on the noise coming out of the vent ( gurgly water noise) and is not cemented on, i will be playing with that portion of the overflow till i get it right. by the way, the whole plumbing system i used a threaded union piece in the intake and the return, so that it can be taken apart to clean/ move tank if neccisary.( pics) one pic is of the return ( has the valve) this peice will go directly from the pump up to the tank, a peice needs to be added from the threaded union to the 90 , need to finish the stand before exact measurement can be made; the other is the intake...part with the capped end will have holes drolled through it so the water is dispersed throughout the drip tray. few questions now.. when i drill the hole at the top of the return pipe so as to prevent a reverse syphon if the power to the pump is cut, what size does this hole need to be? also when i get the stand done and i get the sump up and running, am i going to have a mini cycle no matter what because of all the new filter media, or will i be able to prevent this somehow( overflow will be going right where the current filter is, so i really cant keep the filter going in that spot ) perhaps putting the old filter media in the drip tray? thanks in advance

If you can keep the filter you have now going It would help greatly but if not take out the media bag and bio wheels if you have them and just float them in the center section on the sump for the first few weeks there won't be a mini cycle it will be like a big water change. Did this cycling my 29gal DIY sump for my 75gal tank had no cycle problems at all. Hope this helped.

thanks for the info. my filter now is just one that has the filter cartridge in it, hangs on the inside of the tank type of thing by suction cup and a small arm thing over the back... for sure can put the media into the sump area, maybe also it might be possible to set the whole filter up somehow inside the sump tank for a few weeks. question two.... this whole system is kinda being designed (sump-stand that im building) to eventually switch the dt to a 20 gal tall. when i do the switch, provided that i use the same substrate/deco/ect from this tank aside from cutting longer plumbing pipes i should just be able to
1) drain current tank put fishes in safe place
2) remove tank from stand and replace with new and re set up sump system
3) put gravel plants rocks ect. into new tank
4) put water that i save from old tank into new tank
5) top off tank with more fresh water
6) no worries?
