| Diy Fish Food I know plenty people have tried this before, but I'm interested to see what other people thought of it and whether they have any tips for me.
I made food using:
Tuna
Salmon
Whole shrimp
Blood Worm
Daphnia brine shrimp
Ant eggs
Peas
Carrots
Spinnach
Garlic
Multivitamin Powder
Gelatin (as a binding agent)
Whatever was left in my flake food tubs + ground up algae biscuits
IT STINKS!!
I gently cooked the mix after I blended it into sludge and I've separated it into manageable daily use blocks using ice cube trays and old frozen bloodworm trays.
I tested the batch the other day, and the fish couldn't eat it quick enough! I was so pleased with the result that I couldn't help but give them another block to eat!
Anyone else try this before? Any thoughts or ideas?
I'm interested to learn about other people's attempts. |

| In the fish store, fish food section.
On the shelf labelled "ant eggs"
I just had an old jar of them left over which weren't getting used. |

| heh
I made so much of it that I'll not have to buy any fish food for months! I have batches in a box in my freezer.
It'll save me a small fortune!
If you do ever make it, a word of warning - It can be messy and very smelly!
- oh and no matter how much your friends/family dare you, don't taste it.
It's not nice... Last edited by Steve113; January 15th, 2009 at 01:22 PM.

| Hahaha.
Oh man, please don't tell me that you tasted that!
My mother made fish for my cats once, during that pet food poison scare, and I actually had to leave the house. I can't stand any strong smells like that. |

| Ewww, but I really shouldn't be saying anything.
I've tried many different types of cat & dog food, including treats. lol.
That's what I get for working in a humane society. |

| I'm going to start a poll - Who here has tried the fish food we give to our fish. I bet it's swayed in the majority to "yes"
although people may not like to admit it! |

| I use some of the following foods you listed and i also used a beef heart, whole tapioca (sorry can't spell it) and various other vegetables like spinach, cucumber, zucchini (courgettes)., If you don't want to use gelatin to bind it together you can use eggs.
I have not tried my mixes for the carnivores or the vegetarians as i dont cook any of it. I mix it together then freeze it, then when frozen cut it into bite size chunks and keep in a freezer clearly labeled "not for human consumption".
You could also add snails to the mixture (garden ones if you know they are chemical free) and put them in the food processor with the other ingredients or duck weed if you have too much of it!

| cheers Anna.
I was hoping that someone with a valid input to this thread would come along some time or other!
I hadn't thought about eggs - It would have been nice to know as I had to settle for flavoured Jelly as I run out!
All natural ingredients though so it's ok - I hope...
A little bit of strawberry never hurt anyone! Last edited by Steve113; January 16th, 2009 at 01:43 PM.

| hehe - I've got no floaters yet so I don't suppose the Strawberry flavour has had any adverse effects.
I bet they love it really. Although I'm not sure the flavours all go well together! |

| lol I can think of very few species in the world that don't like surgar. It's easier energy for metabolisms to digest in most cases. |

| lol I didn't say that it wouldn't hurt the fish if it was just small amounts mixed into the food.
dumping a sugar bowl into a tank has probably been tried by a toddler or two. Not something I would recommend. EVERYTHING likes to grow on sugar, that bacteria ect that would flock too you're tank would scare me. <shudder> |

| When I was a toddler I stuck my finger in the flake food and ate it XD I was too curious for my own good. "Let's see how far I can rock the rocking chair will standing up on it!" "Oh! It's the shiny thingy mom runs across her legs!" "What will happen if I put mommy's car keys in the funny face on the wall (it was an electric outlet)"
Half of it is still unknown to my parents.
It might be interesting to try different foods- I doubt my fishies will mind testing a little bit of raw turkey or chicken. |
