Need cheap ways to build a pond

Do any of you know any ways to make a cheap pond using things from your home?

you could dig a hole in your yard using a shovel and use a large bin as a base then you could look on craigslist for a cheap filter add water and get some cheap goldfish to start with. ive heard some people use feeders.

hope this helps

Well, that is a great idea and I'd say that that would work well. I will keep goldfish if I can build one.

YEa, digging your own and getting the black liner and a pump would be all. Then maybe some rocks to decorate around it?
I am going to build my own pond this summer, if everything permits (will comment on another thread I might not be physically able this year).

What about an old bath tub?

That could look funky and you could pick up an old tub from a scrap merchant for pennies!

You could rig up one of the taps with a simple pump so thay the water comes out!

if you like the idea of re-cycling old stuff for your garden - check this website I found when I was exploring the feasibility of the bath idea...
(I particularly like the bottle tree! )

How handy are you? I got a preformed liner cheap because the store was not carrying that particular style anymore. My brother hauled rock in off the desert for me. I bought some of the keystone block because I wanted a wall I could sit on. Then every day when I got home from work, my Mom mixed up a batch of mortar mix and I built up a row of rock. That way it had all night and all the next day to cure before I put the next row on. It actually had two days, because I built a rock wall on each side so I would alternate which side I added to each day. One bag of mortar mix was more than enough for the rock wall. The most expensive part of my pond was the filter. I got an external pressure filter with a uv light.
My sister did hers a bit different. She dug a hole with a shelf on one end. Then she built it up with three rows of the keystone block. She used a flexible liner for hers. It is a rectangle whereas mine is more of a freeform oval-ish type of shape. She put one row of block on top of the liner to hold it in place. She built a rock waterfall on one corner, but you could do a fountain instead. Some of the pumps come with fountain heads. She uses the shelf for her filter, and when she has young plants, she puts them on the shelf until they grow big enough to put down in the pond. Her filter is all inside her pond. Its a flat box looking thing that the water goes through before it reaches the pump then from the pump to the waterfall and back in the pond.
Both of us started out with feeder goldfish in our pond. My feeder goldfish (that cost 10 cents each when I bought them) are now an average of 10 - 12 inches long and my sister's fish are even bigger.

Whoa, someone needs to learn how to use the ¶ button!

A pond is basically as cheap as the liner you buy for it and whatever pump/filter you have in it. It's that simple.

depends on you're climate... -40*C in the winter requires a bit more input to the pond usually. It needs to be deeper or you need to invest in a winter tank inside.

Have you thought about looking into a cattle trough?
