40W of lights for under $10

Menards was having a sale on some of their halogen and xenon puck lights, and I got a double set of the xenon lights (20W apiece) for $7. I bought a 3" length of wood for $2. I attached the pucks to the wood, then used some scrap wood I had in my garage to make legs for the thing. The scrap wood and extra screws amount to pennies apiece, so this was an excellent deal. The puck lights do put off a good amount of heat, but this is over my guppy fry tank, which has been having problems keeping up to temp, so I'm okay with the extra heat.

One word of warning: Nothing about this is rated for being used near water. It is imperative to make sure that there is no way for a cord to get immersed in water.

halogen's are very hot and WILL explode if splashed with water, which may send tiny bits of glass into your eyes...hopefully you know this already, but be careful!

They're actually xenon, not halogen, but yes, I knew that. And they do have plastic covers to protect them from splashes, at least.

oh that's good, the plastic should be highly resistant to thermal stress. (at least compared to glass, lol).

this is a neat upgrade, but that's a lot of heat lol.

Yeah, it's a lot of heat, but it's far more efficient than incandescents (not as efficient as fluorescent, though).
