diy stand.

DIY stand.

the stand i would like to build is for a 10g tank.

i built a design to scale out of cardboard to see wat this might look like.
the ideal dimensions im looking for is 27x24x14.
i would like to hinged door on the top half leading to one flat shelf and to seperate pull out shelves on the bottem.

can anyone give me some further ideas for this along with a relative quote for price of this

27 inch high
24 inches with
14 inches depth

ps to hinged doors leading to two connected shelves is also another thing im intressed in

The price would depend on the type of wood you use and how much wood is used. Can you give more specific details. A picture of your scale model would be nice.

your best bet is cedar, it's about $6 for an 8' 2x4. They're cheap because they're used in construction of walls. (you'll probably only need one of these). It's rot resistant and is one of the strongest "soft woods". Spruce is the strongest soft wood, but that's usually priced like hard woods ($30 per piece!)

NOTE: a 2x4 is actually 1.5" x 3.5" ...so account for that in your design.

Then you can get any kind of plywood to fill the space between the cedar frame, 1/4" backer board is fine (used under floors). $5-6 if i recall correctly.

Materials:
1 or 2 8' cedar 2x4 (depending on construction method)
1x 8'x4' backer board
decking screws

Tools:
- a good cross-cut saw
- hand held circular saw
- carpentry square
- 2x picture frame clamps (but obviously, you'll want FOUR of these. lol)
- hand held drill and countersinking drill bit
- table saw (to cut slots for the plywood, or mitering the plywood if applying to outside of frame).

Now...here's my honest opinion; don't try this. have someone else make it, like your father or older brother. The construction can get tricky and you CANNOT afford a weak joint or off-square construction in this structure. It must be perfect, and I don't think someone with little carpentry experience can do it.

I have a lot of experience and I'm still weary of building something like this because any failure is catastrophic.

Plus, a project like this will take a long time to complete. Buying a pre-made piece and modifying it to your taste (adding shelves, side panels, etc) is often much easier (and often cheaper) than building from scratch.

I'll give you all the help I can if you choose to continue, I still want to give you the best chance of success. I just don't recommend it.

thanks just for refrence i not rally left alone.

my dad gave me the choice of trying to build new lighting for the 29g or a stand for the 10g.

i not real shure yet im leaning toward this because i would also like the storage space in stead of keeping all my RO conditioner and food/ferts on my desk...

i just doing the research.

i have the help and my dads good with this kind of thing i just wanted another quote from someone who has made one.

my dad said $50 and i said let me look that up because it kind of sounded pricy.

i mean im not trying to make a $300 stand for $20 bucks...
thanxs

well if you have your dad's help then have at it. It can be done for substantially less than $50, like I said, probably $20. You don't need expensive wood, you just need a good design (and careful construction, can't stress this enough. measure, measure, and measure again)

I'm a little confused about your dimensions...did you put them in the wrong order? (Length x width x height). Let me know, then I'll throw out a basic plan.
