re-sealing a tank

recently my mom found a 100 gal tank, it holds water but is really ratty looking since someone sealed it themself, and didnt do a neat job. the tank has a few scratches in it, so i want to refurbish the tank for my new reef. so i am wondering if i have to cut the tank into pannels or if i just scrape and clean the joins, also if there is some kind of glass polish out there to buff the tank up all nice

As far as I know, only diamond can scratch glass for good. Check if indeed it is glass and not acrylic or alike. Sometimes solid deposits may look like scratches in glass; most times it will get cleaned by rubbing cloth damped in a vinegar solution (no need to be precise here).

Combine patience with care so you don't end up with nasty cuts. I say this because I am prone to that. A blade knife will likely aid in removal of all silicon. A few 1/2 or 3/4" thick cork sheets would help you in holding your glass safely as you add pressure to it.

Good luck with your project. Hope you upload some pics for us.

i will try to upload pics but i am not good at it. i have all the silicone off i am in the prosses of scraping the lime and calcium stains off it witch is very teedios and the scratches are deep and are not coming out. i was at the LFS today and he suggested that i go to the local glass shop and see if the is a polishing compound for glass, so i am going to look into that tomorow.

I would wait till you are done sealing it and see if the scratches can be seen when the tank is fill then polish if there still there. I have 1 on my 75 can only tell when your about 12" away when full be plane as day when empty.Alittle tip when you reseal I put the silicone on extra thick then took an old credit card cut one corner on a 45deg angle then used it as a scrapper it give you a really neet seem but the corners are tricky.
