What do think about this DIY mini canister?

I just stumbled with this interesting DIY mini-canister filter. Wonder if a big-size unit would be feasible to build. At least this mini-canister looks interesting for a quarantine/hospital tank, what do you think?

Please check this article (has three pages)

That's really cool! Perfect for a small tank. I've been thinking about getting a 2.5 gallon for some shrimp and that would be perfect.

I guess one obvious backdraw to this would be a size restriction... the larger the pump you put in it, the more pressure there would be on the container. Most plastic containers with lids dont have a very good sealing ability where the lid attaches, so if you used a pump that created too much pressure.... well you can imagine the outcome lol.

i noticed in the foster smith catalog (I just read it for the articles, I swear) that you can buy a small canister that hangs on the tank for $20.99 that is 80 GPH. For the price it might not be worth the trouble. It still looks fun though

I agree this might be cool and cost/effective for the smallest size tanks range (2.5-10gal), although this could complement/add-up to biological filtration in tanks up to 30gal.

Extreme care should be placed in not pushing the limits so we don't experience what clinton1621 points out! LOL Good point Clinton!

For bigger tanks I guess it's better to go with those simple DIY designs for Wet/Dry sump filters.
