Anyone ever

Anyone ever converted an old Computer monitor or tv into a fish tank? Does it work or is it a waste of time? I've been toying with the idea but I don't know if it would be worth it or not.

You could do it. You'd have to remove everything from it (TVs and monitors have a lot of copper and other toxic materials), and I would replace the monitor glass with new glass, especially if you've got a pretty big one (as the glass likely isn't made to take the strain you're putting on it). You'd also need to figure out a way of sealing everything up inside, too. You may want to try using pond-building tactics for this, such as using plastic and/or spray-in liner.

If you mean to completely gut the monitor and build your own custom glass hand fitted tank inside the empty case, then this would be a great idea.

You could cut & hinge the top of the monitor's case, to feed the fish...
You could install miniture flouresent lights inside of the hinged top....

If you mean to use the existing glass then It is a total waste of time.
The glass is many times stronger than the weight (strain) of the water could create.

The problem is the inside of the glass has wires imbedded and the front screen has a metal coating that will poison the fish.
This same coating will also reduce your ability to view your fish through the glass.

A "CRT" is really a light bulb (inside).

Another problem might be in cutting the glass, it really tends to crack.
Maybe you know how to grind the glass, I do not.

lighting might prove tricky...

with that kind of monitor you'd have to make sure that the base could support the extra weight of water. Also the rolling angle'd base thingy might shift and spill water.

but i can't help but ask... why would you want a useless plastic bulky frame round your tank: - limiting view to only 1 angle, and preventing all natural light getting to your fish!?
