This is a great project... and a very cool looking tank. Below is a link to one of our members thread on the same subject. Tim has built many tanks and after seeing this same set up, went and figured it out and built his own. Its a long thread, with many responses, but if you read through it all, he shows you how to build it.

ok what they doo is take a glass and make a bottem tank. then they take a nother tank like 20g tall and flip it up side down and make supports for it and then they install an air tube on the 20g tall on the inside of the tank up side down they hook it up to an air pump and it pumps all the air out of 20 gall tall and sucks it out of the base tank. you will have to fill the bottem tank a few times as it takes water from it up in to the 20 gal tall once you get all the air out you can pretty much take the air tube out. thats not that much detail there is another post some were on here about this with alot of detail and some one made one them selves also they connected 2 tanks like this.
When I first viewed the video...my immediate thought was Gosh, they are so crowded I feel so bad for the Angel...they love to swim, and imo that is just not enough room. Great techno tank, but seems a bit mean to me.

I thought it looked small as well for that many fish.. I kinda wonder if its bigger then it seems on tape? The more i watched the video, with some of the different views, it appeared much bigger...
For your information, the combination of the two tanks ended up at 62 gallons, well within the 1" per gallon capacity, and the angels just loved the top tank, since they like deep water. It also proved to be very successful as a breeding tank, with gouramis and bettas both producing successful sporns in that column!
The dimensions of the two tanks are: bottom tank, 48"x12"x18" standard, top 24"x11"x24" custom made.
Just a few hints that might help on your project too. make sure you have some method of circulating the water in the top tank, as the temperature will rise by several degrees up top if you don't, and there is a risk of the water stagnating too if it's not moved round.
This can be done by two methods: A water pump, forcing the water up into the column, or by an air feature.
If you want to introduce an air feature, take care. I gave up after a couple of weeks, mainly because I couldn't stop the water getting into the air pump. I tried several different ways to make it work, but short of a specialized pump, it seems doomed to failure with standard air pumps. (I had three pumps short out during my trials)

The original concept for the "open bottom" aquarium was displayed on "Fishkeepers Forum" 1n 2004.The system details a glass tunnel linking 2 aquariums.It is filled with a vacuum pump evacuating the air causing the water to be pulled in.
