| Coconut caves Has anyone ever done one of these? I am going to attempt one this afternoon. I'm hoping to find one jumbo sized coconut (the bigger the better) to make two caves out of for my 55 gallon.
To those who have made them, how many times did you have to boil them until the water was no longer brown? Did you attach java moss? |

| Hi Gamer
I have seen coconut shell caves in petstores. I dont know how long you should boil them or what to do to cure them for your tank, but I have seen them, so guess your idea should work out. Let us know how it goes, and maybe there is someone here that has had some experience with this.

| Hi there.
Coconut shells are loaded with tannans (sp?) which from what I understand are relatively harmless to fish but will turn your water brown therefore it's good to boil them a couple times until no more brown comes out. I was just wondering how many times I'd probably need to boil it before all the tannans are removed.
I haven't seen them in any of the pet stores near me. I have looked online and aquariumgarden used to carry them but now it appears they no longer sell them so I'm going to make my own. I'll be sure to post some pics. |

| Great link! I made one. It looks like I need two. My upside-down cats and pleco are fighting over it. |

| what a fantastic idea. looking forward to seeing plenty of pics. might have a go myself! yeah tannins are found in wood, and as coconut shells are kinda woody, they may release tannins. did yours release any tannins? i was lucky with my driftwood in that neither of them released any tannins at all. tannins are harmless to fish though, they occur in nature. just a little unsightly for your pristine tank so dont lose sleep over them! good luck ;-) |

I've had one for about 6 months. It's been with corys (Loved it!), Livebearers (Ignored it!) and Malachai the betta. (Couldn't live without it! He's getting a new one soon, so he has 2!) I've also heard of CoConut caves which have had 1/4 chopped of the bottom instead of 1/2, and a hole drilled in the middle of the big bit. Either way, it's a great looking, cheap way to create a place to grow Anubias, Java moss and Java fern, makes a great hide out for catfish, shrimp, bettas and other critters who like to have caves to play in! It also gives yo an excuse to drink yummy coconut milk. |

| coconut caves Hi no need to boil, mine did not leach. They dont float either.Make you hole, what ever size, get a flat headed screw driver and score it,inside.Put it in oven at about one hundred, for roughley 1 hour.Coconut should come away from sides. Then just brake it up,and pull out of hole.Give good rinse under hot water, and put it in.And eat the coconut yummy |
