Hi, I am new to saltwater fish tanks and I have some questions on refugiums. I have a 20 gallon fish tank that has 25 lbs of live sand and a surface skimming filter. What are the benefits of having a refugium? and could I build one myself?Thanks alot

I think the biggest two reasons to have a refugium are to increase water volume in the tank and to grow macro allege that will help clean the water or waste. They are easy to make from preexisting tanks by just adding a couple baffles or you can make them from scratch just like you would make a tank. A good site I have found: Melevsreef.com

Edit: you can also hide all your equipment like heaters and protein skimmers in the sump too.
