Replacement part for a filter?

When my old rm brought me the community tank (she didn't want it anymore) she also brought me an old filter (and three air pumps, bringing my total to five). It still runs and I don't see any reason why it should be thrown out - and extra filtration isn't a bad thing. However, it is missing a part - the curved part at the top of the intake, that bends around and goes into the canister part. To order a replacement part would cost nearly the same as buying a new filter, so I was wondering if it would be possible to replace it using flexible tubing of some sort, or PVC, or whatever. Has anyone ever tried?

would you have pics of each end of where the missing part would go? it might be possible with a piece of semi-hard tubing or pvc if it fit exactly i think.

I'll take pictures when I have enough hands to bring it in from my car... Thanks!
