Sealing drilled fishtanks

I have an opportunity to get a very inexpensive aquarium from someone. The only problem is that there are holes drilled in the bottoms of all of their aquariums.
Is it worth the time and effort to try to seal a 1" hole on the bottom of the tank, or should I just keep looking for a better deal?

Re: Sealing drilled fishtanks

can you not make use of it?

The tanks were originally in a shop I would guess and linked to a central filtering system. Could you not make use of the hole and fit a riser overflow type system to a sump or cannister filter?

Failing that, all you need to do to make the tank servicable is to get small squares of glass and silicon them over the holes on the inside of the tank. The tank will be good then! (Have to be on the inside, or you risk cracking the bottom of the tank by having a raised section underneath) If you want to be sure of a seal, fill the hole with silicon and smooth off after fitting the glass cover inside.

I'll take as many as you can get! lol

Re: Sealing drilled fishtanks

I plan on this being simple. It's for the school fish tank that I discussed previously, and I can't afford to put anything fancy in it. I do have a HOB filter that I could easily add to the tank.

Thanks for the info.

I think the glass or acrylic square idea on the inside sounds good, as the water pressure when its filled will only ensure the seal, if my thinking is correct.

you can always go to a glass shop and have them cut you a new peice and replace it...

I would KILL for a drilled tank!!! But if you just can't do anything with it, you could always sell it to raise money for a new tank!

Re: Sealing drilled fishtanks

Usually you see them used for Saltwater set ups. It requires more equipment, but they are also REALLY expensive to buy new.

You'd kill, eh?

So what you're saying is that if I can get you this tank...

I'm seriously pondering picking one up just to have for when I start working with saltwater. That's such a long way off, though.

(I no longer need the tank for the school, the teacher got one already)

Since we usually put gravel in the tank anyway, you should put a smooth river stone on top and seal them together. Or, you can do the same with a nice landscape.
