Air pump silencer

I don't know if it's been done before, if it's already mentioned here, or even if it's so obvious that it wasn't worth mentioning. But I'm a newbie and I thought it worked well for me so I thought I'd share...

When we bought or "super quiet whisper air pump" we discovered just how much truth there really is in advertising which is to say NONE! maybe it's just a new noise that we'd have to get used to, maybe they're all like this, either way I wasn't going to stand for it.

While I was running hoses and such I noticed that everytime I put my hand on the pump it got really quiet - exactly what I expected when I bought the thing, then if I let go it just buzzed away again - very frustrating...

Four blobs of 'bluetac' and a third of a brick sitting on top has silenced the thing beautifully!

Re: Air pump silencer

I thought adding weight to those things was bad though?

Honestly, what I do with mine, is hide them someplace or hang them. My girlfriend's 2.5 gallon has a small one that we stuck under her tank, since there's a hole to run it under there. Nice and quiet that way.

With my big one, I hung it up in the stand, from a nail. Since it doesn't touch anything, long nails bent to perfection work wonders, there's no noise at all.

I'd worry about putting weight on top of it myself, since I've never done that.

Re: Air pump silencer

i've actually not had trouble with ours. it's completely quiet and powers the airstones for 8 of the tanks. i think it's the non-skid grip on the bottom.

Re: Air pump silencer

Mine used to be loud until I bought a 2-way valve to control the air coming out of it. Once I hooked that up it was very quiet. The only time it makes noise is it if happens to move or something slips and touches it and then it makes that vibrating noise. Natalie

Re: Air pump silencer

I recently upgraded to a super quite, not a noise one though my last one was from my mom's second tank (20 years old) and sounded so loud I couldn't sleep, so I wrapped it up in towels and hung it off of my wall and that quited it down to a dull whisper.

good point.. i have each of the 2 outputs from our air pump going to a 4-way gang valve.

Re: Air pump silencer

After reading about hanging it I gave it a go - and it works! as long as the cord and air line aren't vibrating against anything the pump is near silent.

Re: Air pump silencer

I have 4 clearseal pumps with 4 outlets on each, and found them so noisy even when I built them into cupboards, so I came up with the following solution:
I built a small waterproof box outside my window, large enough to house the 4 pumps and power. I then ran a length of 8mm tubing through the wall into the living room where the tanks are.

Using a series of 8mm to 6mm reducers and "T" connectors, I joined all the outlets together and then connected to the 8mm tubing through one-way valves.

Inside, I just reversed the process with the 8mm to 6mm reducers and connected up the tanks, all 14 of them.

The 8mm tubing acts as a resevoir for the air and even ifhe pumps switch off there is a couple of minutes of air in the pipes. As for noise, there isn't any noise inside other than the sound of the bubbles. Outside there is a gentle humming, which doesn't matter.

my old 1 gallon used one and my favorite trick was using a small sock that would hold it really tight
