(100L) 26 Gallon Tank, Discus?

Basically I have a new 240L tank which i have moved all my loaches, and other fish to. So now i have a 100L tall tank sitting there and im thinking a Discus only tank.

On the fish profile page it has 30gal min prefers tall aqariums

My Questions are:

Is this big enough?

How many Discus could I have?

Edit, 1st time to this site, and i just noticed (after posting ><) that there is a sub forum for just Discus, mod should prob move this question there

Welcome to Fishlore Glad you're here.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with discus, but I'm sure another member will be along shortly that can answer this for you.

Welcome!

I would definitely not advise keeping discus in a 26 gallon. I'd suggest 55 gallon minimum for these fish.

Are you interested in SA dwarf cichlids at all? Rams or apistogramma would be a good choice for a 26.

i agree with harpua, discus need at leas 55 gallon. You should definately move them to the 240L (approx 70G). I would recommend anywhere between 5-8 discus (juvenile or adult).

Unless its a breeding pair, then the 26gal will work fine. Otherwise, nah i wouldn't.

Good point, I was working on the assumption that the OP wouldn't be buying a breeding pair due to the high cost!

Hmm so i still need a fish for the smaller aquarium.... but that can be sorted later.

With my 240L I have community of fish in there at the moment.

7 Clown Loaches
2 Cory
2 Angles
10 Cardinals
5 Rummy Nose
4 Pleco

Would this be to crowded if I were to add 3/4 Discus

I dont want to stress out the Discus, the angles are still small so they arnt too aggressive yet.

That would be EXTREMELY overloaded without adding any discus. 7 Clowns Loaches is almost impossible for any one to house when they get big, and 4 pleco releases tremendous waste. With this load, you could never keep the tank pristine enough for discus to thrive in.

Discus are really not community fish. They require constant high temps of 84 degrees, frequent water changes, and pristine conditions. Also, unless you get adults, juvies should be grown out in a barebottom tank. If you are interested I would highly recommend getting a tank for them alone. They are expensive, so not a fish that you want to accidently kill. They are gorgeous and well worth the high cost if you have the right set up though

Welcome to Fish Lore! I have to agree that your tank is over stocked. Clown Loaches will grow to 12 or 13 inches. Plecos are major waste producers and depending on what type you have they can grow as big as 18 inches. Some Plecos will only grow to 6 inches though.
Keep and eye on your water chemistry readings. You may want to consider rehousing some of the clown loaches and Plecos into a larger tank. If that is not an option then possibly returning them to where you made the purchase.
I think your tank would look great with everything you have mentioned excluding the clown loaches and Plecos. Depending on what Plecos you have I would keep one if they are the smaller version when adults.
Best of luck and keep us posted.

Well it was 5 of the loaches and 4 plecos in the 100L tank for almost 2 years and they have grown quite well. (loaches were all about 2" when i got them, and now range from 6" to 8")

The Plecos are the ones with the bristles on their noses, they were about 1" when i got them and are all about 4"-5" now

I upgraded to the 240L tank because it was the largest tank i could fit, and it gives them more room.

Water is always good, test it every week

0ppm nitrite
0ppm ammonia
20-30ppm nitrate
6.6PH
