Stunted Discus

The first picture is a stunted Discus, Shaped like a football and has huge eyes, and alot of patterns and colors suggest that its older than its size suggest.

The second picture are of two 4 month old Discus, I got for $96 each, their nice and round, you can tell their females by the end of their dorsal fins, a males are pointed and a females rounded off.

Beautiful Discus. I also had bought stunted Discus at one time and they lived for a few years like that, hardly growing til they died. Poor things...
well, even if we are not breeding them or showing them, the poor little stunted ones still need a good home and thats how I looked at it.
I miss my Discus, the last of the adults died about 3 months ago. Some day I may think of keeping them again.. but for now, my other tanks and fish keep me too busy.
Best of luck with your Discus!

Definently a good example of a stunted discus. I'd have to say though that Brilliant in the back of the 2nd picture looks like its a bit stunted too. With good diet and good water things could turn it around, but its definitely not as round as the red seems to be.

The fin sexing is very iffy. For the most part i tend to agree with you, but not always is that the case. I have seen females with streamers and males without. These look way to young to sex in any case.

Looks like the red and blue could be pretty nice fish given proper care. But who knows how long they were at the LFS ya know? They could be older then we think. Still nice colors. Keep up the feedings and WCs and see what happens!

Do i spy a worm feeder in there? What type of worms do you feed?

The LFS said they were 4 months old, THe pigeonblood is probally way older than that, I feed em black worms, I have a 5 gallon tank culture full of them.
They eat all kinds of things, from flake food, frozen foods, shrimp pellets, dried baby shrimp, dried bloodworms, and cichlid pellets.I give them worms twice a day and change 50% water every other day, and I clean out the canister filter and wipe walls down once a week. I vacuum the gravel good during wc's.
I hope to try and raise some soon, I need to add a washtub sink and a hvac vent in my garage first.
