| | Fish Master | Its a go with the Discus!! I talked it over with my husband.. I am going to have to do a lot of work transfering cichlids out of the 58g, but I have sevral other un-full tanks to put them in... Then I have to move substrate out since crushed coral isn't good for Discus...
I am looking at lighting for plants (suggestions please!). My husband likes the "glo" systems..
I am going to get it full of plants, driftwood, cycle it with the new stuff, and put cory's in there. THen after a few months of establishment I plan to stock it with discus!!!! |

| | Fish Master | Wow! Congrats!
I wish I could find someone who loved fish keeping as much as I do.
You're lucky to have such support. |

| | Fish Mentor | Congrats. I'm going to be getting some discus too!
I have used a GLO HO T5 fixture and wasn't that impressed. I had the 2 ft., 2 bulb strip and there is no power switch. You either have to put it on a timer or unplug it to turn it off. Plus, it only uses one reflector over the bulbs, which really doesn't maximize the light output. The Current Nova fixtures at least bend the reflector into sections over each bulb, and some of the more expensive ones (like Sunlight Supply's Tek Light) actually use individual reflectors over each bulb. Then again, if you aren't looking to dose ferts or use CO2, it may be a better idea. |

I just thought the glo ho's were for plants?
If thats the case getting one for my 58g will be no problem picking it out, I already know what I like, and what I will be geting into with the nova. Yea, I was hoping not to have to do CO2 or ferts. |

| | Fish Helper | They seem like hardy fish, although I just lost a $60 one today, he got his swim bladder busted by the other Discus I think, He was a stunted runt anyway, Make sure you buy good ones. |

Yea, I was hoping not to have to do CO2 or ferts. | I'm not quite sure what you mean by that... the GLO bulbs or GLO fixtures themselves? I like the Current as well, I just picked up a used one (Nova Extreme Pro, 6x 39W) for my marine upgrade and it is AWESOME for a mid-price fixture.
As long as you choose T5 bulbs between 65ooK and 10000K it will be fine for plants. Quote:

I'm with you- going for quality this time rather than just buying from a LFS. Are you growing them out from juvies or trying to do it in the planted 58? I'm going to grow mine out in a barebottom tank until they hit 5-6 inches when I get them, then I'll be putting them in a planted 55. Have you checked out Rocky Mountain Discus? That's where I'm thinking about ordering from. |
