Just got a 55 gal tank have a couple questions:)

Hello, I have a couple questions.

I just tested my water and it's at 7.2 is that do able?

I was thinking about buy a canister filter and is that a good choice? From reading in the care guide it say to remove the carbon filter media. Im alittle confused on that because I went to the pet store and they said to use the carbon filter? After looking at all the filter for sale they seem like all the filters have carbon.

After looking on the internet and deciding wether to used gravel and sand or both? I want to have plants. any ideas to what is better? If i decide to use both. gravel on the bottom layer and sand on the top layer. would that be hard to clean? would the two mix?

DO any of you use the UV filter?

thanks again for your help!

Hi Hal,
If you are talking about 7.2 pH level yes that is basically pretty ideal mine is at 7.0ph. I would think sand would be hard to clean and your gravel vac myt suck it up. Yes use the carbon filter thats what i and many other people use. Hope this helps!

You don't have to use the carbon... I don't. I just use it to remove meds from the tank. I don't find it necessary for my tanks, and so I'll save some $ instead .
Gravel and sand both have their advantages and disadvantages.... it depends on what you want really. If you mix the two the gravel will eventually end up on top.
Personally, I have gravel in one tank and the Ecocomplete substrate (which is alot like sand) in another, and I prefer the ecocomplete. I think it's just personal preference.

Sand is MUCH easier to clean then gravel. All you do is hover over the top and suck the wastes up. You will want the tank as clean as possible, and as easy to clean as possible for discus.
