The best place to buy discus?

I am very accustomed to buying fish online (aquabid especially) I know mbuna are hardy when it comes to shipping. What about discus? The local fishstore here isn't my favorite when buying fish, so it will not be where I buy my discus.

I was also wondering if I would be better off w/ the giant fake plants that I could take out of the tank to vaccum the tank better. I will prob use a gravel or sand substrate and some driftwood, I just wanted something I could completly take out and clean the tank w/ ease.

Depends on the source. If they pack well, and have healthy fish they should come in great.

I know of many sources for high quality discus. What size are you looking for? Any particular color or just a mix of what catches your eye? Price is hard to ask because it can vary so much. LFS discus are not a good indicator, they are priced way to high for their quality.

Am i allowed to post links to breeders/importers here? I'm not sure. If not let me know and i will gladly shoot you a few sites, names, etc to check out.

Basically the best place to buy them is from the source or as close as possible to the source. Aka, a breeder or importer. You will get terrific customer service, great fish for decent prices (much lower then LFS), and usually the person will in a lot of cases give you their cell phone number incase you run into any problems. Its hard to beat that. The guy i ordered from called me twice, and i called him once. He called before the shipment arrived, i called him telling it arrived, and he called back later to check on the fish.

Philippines

In the Philippines, there are so many places to buy them. But they can be expensive. The price a discus in dollar from pesos in Sept.29,2008 is more than $21.2300.

Matt, that shouldn't be a problem posting to a specific breeder or fish supplier.

We see them at the Atlanta Area Aquarium Association auctions a lot, and really good looking ones about the size of a dessert saucer or something. We see them normally go from $30-$75 at the Atlanta auctions. As Matt said, price varies greatly though.

In that case here is my list for everyone to see incase they were interested. If it causes any problems i will gladly remove it. Keep in mind these are just the ones that i have either worked with personally, talked to, or knew through others working with them. Based on my opinion, however if listed here you really can't go wrong with any of them.

Kenny's Discus (Kenny Cheung) - http://www.kennysdiscus.net/
-Amazing guy and supplier. He imports Asian discus from "Forrest" and Chan Kok Eng, and then resells, gets some awesome quality fish. By far the best i've ever seen/owned. I will go to Kenny first always and if he doesn't have the strain i'm looking for move on from there. Customer service is the best, he will call you to check on the shipment, super nice guy. Prices are very fair for the quality of fish you get. I've never had fish try and pick at the siphon hose during a WC before, until i got fish from Kenny.

Central Ohio Discus (Mike Beals) - http://www.centralohiodiscus.com/
-Another guy with great fish, heard nothing but the best from him. He is also an importer for the most part. He imports Asian discus as well but from Jeffrey Yang, great quality and price.

Discus Hans - http://www.discus-hans-usa.com/
-He mostly does wholesale, and stocks many LFS around the US. He has a store locater on his site to see if any are close. However i find that his discus fall to a lesser grade in LFS care. You can still find nice ones, but if they've been in LFS care for a while they definitely don't reflect the quality that is Stendker Discus. Hans is a really nice guy and might be willing to work with you on getting some fish straight from him. I know he does some orders for people without an LFS that supplies his fish in the area.

Discus KC (Jack Taylor)- http://www.geocities.com/kc_discus/
-Again another nice guy, real nice. He is a true USA breeder. He doesn't import, he breeds all of his stock himself. Doing that though his stock is not always, in stock. As he does not have a constant shipment schedule like an importer. You just have to contact him to find out what he has. He has a reallllllly nice Mandarin Passion red strain, but the wait list right now is at 18 months.

Green Country Discus (Andrew & Angela Richardson) - http://www.aagreencountrydiscus.com/
-More true USA breeders, they breed their own stock. Again they arn't working with many strains or colors but they have a couple.

Gulf Coast Discus (Dan) - http://www.gulfcoastdiscus.com/
-I believe Dan imports mostly. He has some nice fish from time to time. He is not always as stocked up as others but he gets some nice fish. He sells plants and other tropical fish too. He is a reliable supplier of true Altum Angelfish.

Again, this is just my take on them. If you see them here, i would recommend them and wouldn't hesitate to buy from them myself. I have bought from Kenny and Hans and they are both stand up guys that love this hobby. You can't go wrong with any of them. If you don't see someone listed here, thats not to say they can't be trusted....i probably just havn't had contact with them personally or either don't know about them. I'm sure there are other good places to buy out there.

I recommend getting fish at somethingsphishy. I bought 6 discus from them and all arrived alive. I wasn't really sure at first if i should buy online because i had not done it before. However they were efficient and any questions i had they responded promptly and that was even after my fish were payed and all. The shocker for me though was that this store is in Florida and i live in California and all arrived alive. To be honest i would have thought i would have lost at least one in transit but to my luck i had not. All were beautiful and some were even larger in size than what they wrote would be. Hope this helps.

Discus Hans is in Baltimore Maryland. He will let you visit and buy from his stock on some weekends... very busy guy. His operation there seems to be incredible. I am going to visit in April and will give you all an update. During the week they are busy shipping out. Contact him thru his email and you will get a quick response...after April 1st...He is in Europe for the next couple of weeks.

Gwynnbrook Farm Discus is also near Baltimore Maryland and will open by appointment....they also ship anywhere and have a great selection.
