Lost Eruption Leopard

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. Also I'm new to this site.
For Mother's day my daughter bought me two beautiful discus to add to my 4.
A white butterfly and a Eruption Leopard. I quarantined them for at least 6 weeks to watch and medicate. They were shipped from a breeder in NJ, I live in CT. They arrived in very good shape. As I got to know the fish better I noticed a large difference between the Eruption Leopard and my others. The Eruption Leopard was puffing its gills a lot. As if trying to get more oxygen. I have bubblers in this tank and yet the white butterfly was fine. I eventually moved them to my 55 gal. about 1 weeks ago. The white butterfly was fine but the Eruption Leopard was not. I was concerned that I had some anaerobic problems with the gravel as the tank had been set up for several years. So I thought maybe its time to go to a bare bottom and really give everyone a good chance to be happy. My four brightened up even more right away. The white butterfly looked spunky and eating very well. The Eruption Leopard refused to eat. I even tried moving him back to quarantine. He eventually starved himself to death. After about 1 weeks or so of not eating he died yesterday. I took pictures of him the night before he died.
Here's the question. Is it possible that he had a genetic defect. Possibly never right to begin with? Do you think that the breeder should compensate for this expensive fish in someway?
I should add that I'm very cautious with checking water parameters. I change out water at least 2 a week. Filters cleaned about 1 a month.
I'm curious as to what you guys would do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd say you got the fish sick, being that the WB was fine and the fish came in gasping. So yes the breeder should compensate or at least work with you on the issue. IMO. A lot won't though being that the fish arrived alive and in fairly good condition otherwise. Also its been a week. A real breeder true to the hobby would be very willing to work with you i am sure. I'd call/email the breeder and talk to him and just get his insight and let him know whats going on.

On another note, White Butterflies are one of my favorite strains. Beautiful fish.

Thanks Slug, I think I'll let the breeder know what happened. I wonder if he's had any trouble with others of its kind.

Shawnie, I'm working on some pictures. My tank looked great planted but now its pretty bare. I know I'll be itching to fix it up again. I just have to figure out how to keep it cleaner. I had at least 3" of substrate, and difficulties keeping it really clean. With Discus it really seems to matter. But I will post some pictures of the guys if they would just hold still for a sec.
Thanks for the welcome!

My tank is bare too. A planted tank would be great, but i agree...just to hard to keep clean. Bare is so easy. Looking forward to the pictures.

Jess, you have beautiful fish! Thanks for posting them.

I'm sorry for the loss of your other fish, I know it's sad when we lose one and it sounds like you did everything you could for him.

Thanks Lucy and Slug.
Rifter098, no I haven't heard from the supplier. I'm thinking shipping them in wasn't the best way to go. You can't watch them swim around and eat. . . before you pick which ones you want. Unfortunately very few LFS supply different and great looking Discus so its a bit of a risk, shipping that is.
Thanks

Hi Jess,

Your Fish was sick. If fish doesn't eat and droppings has white color, you should take a treatment with metronidazone (500mg/40 litre).

Cheers,
KHOA

Vakvn, hi, I'm very familiar with metronidazone. That wasn't the problem. He seemed to have a problem breathing. I went through treatments with no luck. The rest of the fish are fine though. Thanks for the suggestion.

Discus

Hi Jess,
The problem could have been that the fish were picking on him while you weren't watching because this happened to me. I ordered some fish half way across the U.S. Florida to exact and I live in California and all arrived alive. Anyways the point I'm trying to say was that they were healthy when I had them quarantined then I put them in my main tank and realized they started to pick on one specific fish until he became so stressed out that he didn't eat and slowly withered a way. Not sure if this helps but it is a possibly especially if he was smaller than the rest of them.

Well Storm, I could see that happening but it wasn't the case that time. That beautiful Leopard had a birth defect. His gill covers were too short, all insides seemed to fluff out. He wasn't coping and eventually died. I will be very very careful to pick by hand my next fish.
Now I have a territorial pair I've moved from the 55 to the 25 and all is well in both tanks. The male was picking and terrorizing a newer fish, new guys tail was shredding from all the harrassment. I think he and his "mate" were protecting an area of the tank. Now they have one of their own and are quite docile. Thanks for the reply.
