| Thats must have been hard, they are beautiful fish but I believe they can be very aggressive.
Just a question out of curiosity, how do you know it was a female? |

| Sorry to hear you had to give away your Discus. I know what you mean about them causing problems in a tank tho. The only fish my discus every bothered are Angel fish. The rest they pretty much ignore. What fish did you have in the tank that the Discus were bothering? Id like to know for future references.
thanks, kate |

At the moment tho, my angels and discus are completely ignoring each other. |

your combo in the tank sound great. I have also had black neons with the Discus at one time too. They are great little fish. I have cardinals in with them now, the last of the bunch I had for 9 months or so.
I agree with the problems of Discus and Angels. I had 7 Discus to begin with a year ago, and am down to 2 now. I also have my original two Angels that I have had for a year and had to move these guys around to find the least amount of aggression. That is why one 29 g tank is divided at the moment with an Angel and a Discus. These two fought with the other Discus and Angel fish. My pigeon blood was so bad that it killed one of the smaller Discus I had. Its a tough call to add these two species together. Right now I have an angel and a Discus in the 55 and at least these two arent too bad together, just the occasional scuffle around feeding time with my blue diamond being the aggressor. Good luck on getting your male... with all this talk lately about Discus, Im almost tempted to get more. But they sure do not like new comers to their established tank! |

When I bought my Discus a year ago, they were not quality fish. Three were stunted in growth and never grew, no matter what I fed them. I lost one in the first week of bringing them home. Another was so stressed from being picked on by the other Discus that it eventually just died. I dont know what happened to the other two over time, it seems so long ago now. My remaining two are doing great and have grown quite a bit.
My biggest Angel, the silver striped is a good size for its age, 13 months old now and measuring from tip to tip of its fins, its probably around 9 inches. Its body is probably around 4 inches. The Marble I got at the same time is not as big. It seems that the Discus have pretty much the same tempermant as the Angels in regards to getting along with the same species. My Discus were constantly charging each other for dominance in the tank and was very stressful. The Angels are the same way. I may be rocking the boat if I were to bring home a baby Discus to the tank... as much as I would love to, I just dont want to deal with the aggression that may result. |

| Sometimes an extra Discus helps! Hi Sabi and Kate,
I had a businessman locally like me so much that he gave me a considerable discount! As my favorite Discus is only a 'littlie' and was getting the rough end of the stick from the other 2 bigger ones......I decided to use the extra money for another Discus. This guy, who was hiding under a rock so thoroughly when I eyed him off in the shop that I asked if he was shy, turned out to be the biggest and bossiest fish in my tank!
Let's just say that everything is going 'swimmingly well' in my tank now, because the newbie 'Epsilon' has not only sorted out bossy 'Brutus' the bigger Angelfish, but also 'Snarkey' the Redtailed Shark who also gets a bit 'big for his boots' at times! The bullying of little 'Delta' has stopped, too.......
Also, I'm pretty sure that all four Discus are looking way more colourful than before, so everybody's happy! I suppose that even fish have their own personalities......Maybe replace the one that just didn't fit in? Or isn't this the right advice, Kate? Cheers Jewels
PS: Now that it's been at least 3 weeks ago since i bought Epsilon, I must say that all is still going well. The only trouble that I had was when my aerator tubing became blocked by snails after I foolishly decided to switch plugspots on the adaptor one night before going out. When I got home in the wee small hours, I accidentally switched it off! Of course once I awoke I immediately realised my mistake, because I'm very in tune with the behaviour of my pet fish....who all hid under a rock rather than coming out for breakfast as normal........Since I know my freshwater tropical fish pretty well (if I may say so myself!); I decided after unblocking the snails from the tubing that daily water changes for the next 3 days was the way to go......and all is well! All 4 Discus are growing well (little Delta gets a bit of extra hand - feeding to help him catch up) and getting more and more colourful as they grow up. Cheers all......
