Lots of Discus Pics
Hi Everyone,
I was finally able to take some good pics of my new discus babies. They are only about 2 inches long and don't have their adult coloration yet. Thank you to everyone who helped me nurse them back to health. Does anyone think they may know what kinds I have? I got them from somethingsphishy.com as "assorted discus", so I don't know what kind they are. I am really enjoying keeping discus so far. The babies always come to greet me at the front of the tank (so cute, though probably because they think is is time to eat!) I have also included a couple pics of the turquoise guppies and black neon tetras that they share their tank with.

Thanks Val! My water is very alkaline as well, but the driftwood lowers the pH a lot. I have gotten the pH down to 7.2 which is a huge difference from the 7.8 that it usually is. I bought the driftwood at petco. I will never spend that much on driftwood again since it cost 25 dollars, but at the time, I didn't know where to find it cheaper.

hi kate
Yeaaa finally Discus Photos.. and to think I almost missed them!
I love... love... love your tank set up!
You have a very nice assortment of Discus there. They all look great and healthy.
You have at least 2 Pigeon Bloods ( the orange/black spots/dark fins)
You have at least, 2 Blue Diamonds ( the solid blue and the very light tinted pale colored one looks like a baby Blue as well)
You have an assortment of Blue Turquoise (striped).
Only one Discus looked stunted. ( in the third photo first posting of photos) The blue Turq looks like he has very large eyes for his body which usually denotes a stunted Discus. Just make sure you feed them really well through out the day with a good assortment of foods, to include frozen baby brine shrimp and frozen bloodworms.
Im so happy for you... looking at that tank makes me want to add some new Discus to my own tank!

Not at all. It's not your fault that your other fish got in the way of you taking pics of your discus. lol Still, great pics though.

They looked stressed in the first pix. Do they have those dark lines over the eye are all the time? The bluish grey ones don't look right.
What sized tank do you have them in? How many do you have there? You shouldn't have more than 4 in a 40g+ they don't do well. Discus won't grow right in small tanks, they get stunted.

Hi Allie
Judging by the photo of the tank.. and the size of the Discus in there, her tank is fine for now. At some point she will want to get a larger tank. The Blue/grey Discus looks fine to me. I had one with the same coloring, hers is still young and its colors will change as it matures. The striped turquoise and other striped ones do keep that stripe over their eyes. Its part of their pattern. Im sure that some of them may very well be stressed being in a new tank etc. But for the most part.. there are many that keep those stripes all the time and are not stressed.

Yes I know they keep stripes, but the blue ones really don't look right to me. My boyfriend pointed it out.
I hope they are okay now tho.

It looks sunken in or too dark. They eyes just don't look right. But I see she got them as assorted discus sometimes they are just the leftovers. Assorted packages aren't always a good thing unless it's food lol.
I think they are all beautiful. when you see a healthy/quality discus and one which isn't 100% perfect there is a huge difference. The ones at our lfs store look stunted, an probably are considering some are $50+ each and live in the lfs tank for how long?
Sorry to be a nit picker but I am very disease conscience theses days, losing a diamond tetra, Mr. Peach and just healed up my extra male keyhole. I hate months like this.

I do understand. when you buy an assortment you are not necessarily getting top quality Discus. But if you dont plan on breeding them.. or showing them.. they are just as fun to keep as show quality fish and not as expensive for sure. Sort of the same thing as going in and buying Bettas out of the chain stores, they are not quality.. but we love them just the same.
I understand that you are going to be breeding yours to sell, and that its very important to get top quality picks.
Her discus look fine to me. A few look stunted in size..but, they are still wonderful fish to keep. I looked carefully as best I could to the eyes of each, and they look healthy to me, if not in a great round shape and coloration as top Discus can be. I wont be so critical of her fish... because I had my own stunted Discus.. that I truly loved for their each unique personality.
