Female changing partners

Hi All
Boy has there been some changes in my tank overnight..My 2 reds spawned agained yesterday (nothing will become of eggs until I move them on their own) these 2 are inseperaple..well thats what I thought, this morning I noticed my golden and red female behaving like a pair..The golden is guarding the eggs as well as if they were his and wont let the male red near them..poor guy, looks really put out...I know I'm going to have to put the pair on their own asap..but which pair ..looks like my little female is playing the feild..anyway I'll be pondering on this one for a couple of hours and remove 2 most likely the 2 reds..

Re: Female changing partners

Okay now after watching community for an hour I have a problem..golden is guarding both eggs and red male..eggs are viable they have black dots and are going dark and female stress bars are black..she's not happy. There is alot of fighting in tank amongst other fish.I need another tank even if I get one I have to cycle.I'm wandering if I remove the 2 reds wether they will stress over the eggs they've allready laid in community tank..This may sound silly but I had to remove eggs from another pair because they were not any good and they were not happy for weeks..this is really annoying me..I may just have to remove golden for now..

Re: Female changing partners

Hi Nicole
well.. it sounds like you have your hands full! With all the goings on in the tank. So would you be taking out the pair and leave the eggs in the tank without any 'parent' to take care of them? Will they develop and hatch on their own this way? How about using a divider in the tank instead of looking to set up a tank again? This way you can keep them all in the same water they are used to?
Anyway.. ive been so busy today havent had time to come online, tho I did forget to sign out, this is my first chance to stop in at the forum. Its been a loooong day of driving to LFS for another filter and heater and gravel for the other 29g that Im setting up for the two angels that are in the discus tank behind a divider. All was good til I dropped the new filter and it hit the floor and the motor, being the heavy part cracked the plastic. Soooo now its off to the LFS tomorrow for another one.. gawd what a day. Emptying the 10g betta tank and bringing it and the stand into my art/computer room and re setting that one up. Finished setting up the 29g just before supper with the air pump, bubble wand, heater and plastic plants and gravel. Put in some good sponge that has been collecting benificial bacteria for awhile. Ohh yeh, i took a filter off the 55g just for the night, left the bigger one there and put that in the new 29g.. ok ok.. Im rambling here.. jeesh.. Im soooo tired.. its off to bed with myself!! zzzzzzzz..
Wish I was able to offer some advice on what to do, keep us posted... and good luck. I really hope you have success with this batch of eggs!! wouldnt that be nice!!
take care, ~ kate

Re: Female changing partners

Ohhh Know that is hectic..my day is just starting (lunch time here)I hope is isn't like the one you've just had..
Yeah well that's my dilema..I think I'm going to ..think about it some more..LOL..cause at this point I want to remove the 2 that laid the eggs but I will have to wait until eggs are free swimming(fingers X) to do so..but golden will just not leave the male alone,he has him cornered and is not letting go anywhere..its really causing some stress for him..Got to take the trouble maker out but I'm still deciding where..yep I just need two think about it more.

Re: Female changing partners

Hi Nicole
Well.. Im still up but very tired! jeesh.... and its only your lunch time.. too funny, no wonder we never have the chance to meet up too often in the forum.
Yeh I hear you on that stressful situation. We hate to see a Discus cornered and stressed out. Thats why its too bad you dont have at least a divider to seperate them. Can you find one some where today when you get out of work? At least it can be a temporary fix. I hope it all works out for you.

Re: Female changing partners

After a day of way too much thinking I went out and purchased divider..heck these things aren't all that cheap..its settled the situation down for now,but I really am going to have to set up another tank..eggs are still looking good..I would love to be able to get just one to keep from these two.
Oh Kate,
What is going to happen with your filter..I can only imagine how you felt when it broke..Mmmm maybe it was allready broken in the box ..it would be if it was mine.
Anyway I'm hoping by tomorrow I see wrigglers.

Re: Female changing partners

g'morning or g'evening Nicole...
glad to hear you were able to find a divider. Here in the states that size was 12.00 how much did it cost you in Australia? I like those dividers, they are easy to install I am using a Penn-Plax. I really hope you are able to see some eggs grow to hatching.
LOL on the filter... ahem... yes... it BROKE in the box!! lol... I have to do it, I just cant afford another one.. . Im also bringing back the 200w heater that I bought as well, since I already had a nice Hag'er heater that came with the used 29g tank that I picked up. So I will upgrade on the heater and get a bigger size, and get some amazon sword plants for the angels tank. I put in a well seeded sponge in the filter that Im using, a aquaclear 50 so it will be cyled soon. Im going to put the angels in the tank later today and get them out of the divided tank. Im hoping that the shy Discus will feel better about that. Then keep any eye on the water with testing and wc's.
have a great day! (evening?) and good luck with those eggs! ~ kate

Re: Female changing partners

Hi Nicole,
well it was 2:23pm (monday) when you wrote that post. So you are probably about 12+ hours ahead of us. Glad that the divider is working out for you, how are they today?
The divider that I bought was 17 inches by 12 or something close to that. It is also a plastic grid but it has heavy plastic sliders that you would find in school when putting papers together for a report or project. It comes with two metal clips that slide into the heavy plastic and over the top of the tank to keep it in place. Easy to slide in and take off when needed. I finished the angel tank and bought a larger filter and some plastic and silk plants for it and a background. Pictures don't do tanks much justice but I will add a photo of the completed tank in the angelfish section.
Have a g' day! ahhhh...evening that is! lol...

Re: Female changing partners

Hi Kate,
Gee that divider of yours is way better,it has everything with it. Mine is only a plastic grid..had to cut it to size..no clips or anything..I used suction cups.I have also noticed the medications you guys have available to you's are so much better..
I love the silk plants..I dont go much on those backgrounds either..I painted the back of one of my tanks and I love it the water looks so much nicer I'm actually going to paint my larger tanks when I get the opportunity it was easy to do and cheap.I bought a peice of blue velvet for another tank which also looks good as it has a texture to it,anyway I'll post a pic later on today.
Well eggs are still going good although minus a few she ate some when I was putting divider in,I'm expecting wrigglers today..I havn't looked yet..But boy all the others on the other side of divider are not happy, one has scraped his side as they are getting spooked and darting all over the place...another is shimmying/shaking next to the filter..he/she wants to breed or thinks it does..lol..too many hormones in that tank..I have another tank and am going to set it up tomorrow..the sooner I remove those two the all round.

Re: Female changing partners

Eggs are all gone : they've eaten them overnight..which they will do if they aren't feeling there eggs are safe, also if they are a young pair which these are.It can take them a few times to get it right..Its all good as its just going to be easier to put them on their own and I can take the divider out know..

Re: Female changing partners

Hi Nicole
Ohh sorry to hear that the eggs are gone! jeesh.... I know it takes awhile for them to get it right and I hope the next time it will work out. If you want or need a divider in the future I can always pick one up here and mail it to you.. along with any meds that you can't find there too, it would be no problem. Keep it in mind for future reference..
I don't have a background on the discus tank either, tho I use them on the other tanks. It just seems that it would distract from the fish, and I want them to feel that they have abundant amount of room and I don't want them to feel closed in. I like the idea of the paint.. can't wait to see some photos of your whole tank set up.
good luck with the discus and now its time for them to all get back to acting normal again til next time!
