Discus and Angels ???

Hi there,
I hope some discus owners stop by and read this soon. My thoughts are, rather than cycle the other 29g tank for just two of my angels, is it possible that I can introduce them to the 55g tank where I have three Discus? I would like to try it to see if they all get along and hope that others can give me some advice on this combo and if they have ever tried it or know whether it would work or not? Thanks so much.. ~ kate

Re: Discus and Angels ???

Well, I just researched it a bit and most places say no. The angelfish will dominate the discus, they get the food quicker than the discus and can overly stress them. The smallest aquarium for this should be at the very least 75 gallons so that you can fit in more discus than angelfish like a 3/1 ratio so that they are evenly matched and the finicky discus can eat without worry.
Again this is what I just researched and have found elsewhere, I have no personal experience with keeping the two together though I do take care of a pair of angels.

Re: Discus and Angels ???

Thanks Jacko~
Well last nite I put the two angels in the tank with the discus. I stayed up for hours to watch the behavior between them, if there was any problem I would take the angels out right away and put them back in their tank. For the most, they were curious of each other and no fighting or much stress. So far...
Just finished feeding them this am and took my time dishing out their frozen cichlid delight. I know the angels are ravenous eaters and can dominate at feeding time, but it looks like I was able to distribute the food to each. Just takes a little longer but thats ok. There is plenty of room in this tank for them to move around without having to get in each others way and when they do pass each other, they will give the right away to whoever is going by. So far, so good and I am in the room here nearby most the time to be able to watch them.
I have done some research as well and see that some folks do ok with angels and discus and some don't. Seems its the personality of the fish that can determine whether this combo will work or not. I will be observing them and if I see any stress of the discus I will remove the angels.

Re: Discus and Angels ???

Good to hear so far so good.

Like callum said, as long as the angels are still small there shouldn't be a difference, also the discus were in there longer and know their territory better than the angels. I have heard that if there is an estabilished group of either discus or angelfish in the tank and you add a different species it will traumitize them so you are lucky that the discus aren't more than 1 year old and were in there before the angels. I would also like to know the size of the angels, and how old they are.

Well I really dont know how old the angels are. Ive had them for about 4 months. Their body is about the size of a silver dollar. The discus, were at the LFS for about a month before I bought them a few weeks ago. Ive seen small angels in the LFS, and they group them by small, medium and large. Id say they are somewhere between the medium and large size angels that Ive seen. Does that help to age them?
The angels and discus are still doing fine!
I just bought 15 cardinal tetras that I ordered from the breeder. Didnt realize they would come in so small and Im leery of putting them in with the angels and discus at this point. So they are in the tank that the angels were using for now til they get alittle bigger before I introduce them to the tank with the angels and discus.
Ive seen cardinal tetras schooling in a discus tank, but I really dont want these to end up being lunch.

Hi Callum
The angels have been in the discus tank since tuesday evening and everyone is getting along fine so far. No fighting at all. Yes, I meant the coin, when I described the size of the angels. They are roughly around 2 inches or so in body size. The largest discus is around 3 or so inches round. But they all average the same size pretty much.
Im keeping my eye on the tank, I dont want my discus getting stressed out and if i see that happening I would remove the angels asap!

Re: Discus and Angels ???

Hi kate, just dropped in to see what's happening and whether you have that new vid you mentioned in the other thread.

I have no experience with discus, one of the fish I have chosen not to stock, (yet), but by the sounds of it, you have succeeded pretty well. The angels are only small yet, so the cardinals should be ok. Angels will not eat anything bigger than their mouths and I have neons in with one of my 5" angel pairs with no problems. If you had koi in there, it would be a different matter entirely, as I found out once!

Hi Tim
well i came across my windows movie maker and now Im playing around with that before I upload the discus tank video lol...I will post it more than likely on monday when I have some quiet time to do more reading. Thanks for letting me know about the cardinal tetras and the angels. I am now down to five from the 17 on wed. But most was my fault I know. So maybe I will add the last to the tank... will have to think about it.
