New Discus owner

Hey guys, just got this guy 2 weeks ago.
Questions, do they ever become accustomed to lights (had reef lights @ 7K now changed to aqua glo @ 18k Orange to blue spectrum)?
This guy or gal, hates either light so I don't leave it on for more than 10 mins a day, should I increase time slowly to wean him into it or leave him be and get some sort of small spotlight?
Thanx...a couple of pix and that's where he retreats when the light comes on and won't move.

Re: New Discus owner

He may just want a few tank mates, or maybe better hiding places. I realize Discus are ridiculously expensive, but he's probably just lonely. I have 9 Discus (including one Red turquoise, like yours) and they seem to love the company of each other as they definitely a schooling fish. They often get startled and jump a little bit when I first switch the lights on, but they are fine with the light after that. Loneliness is really the only thing I can think of why your fish seems so afraid of the light. You also might try getting a few fairly large plants for the fish to kinda hide behind/in. You can simply put them in glass vases in a tank like yours with no gravel or substrate.

I was just curious as to why you don't have any substrate. I admit I don't know anything about Discus (but i'm always open to learning new things!) I just noticed it and was curious. = )

I can't say personally why their is no substrate, but discus like very clean water and it is easier to keep tank clean with a bare botton tank, but in a discus community tank its good to have substrate on the bottom and create the most natural enviroment you can.If you are breeding its best to have a bare tank.Hope that all made sense

Re: New Discus owner

makes sense to me. thanks! i think they are so beautiful, wish i could afford to get some for my new 55 gallon tank...but being a mom and a college student kinda limits things like expensive fish!
