The Retreat

After plenty of thinking, planning and discussion with my wife, I'm going to turn our laundry room into an aquarium retreat. We call it the laundry room as that is the only place in our house that has hookups for a washer and dryer and no doubt it will still be called that even after the reorganisation.

The room is about 18 feet long x 9 feet wide and was previously a carport that had been enclosed by a previous owner some time ago. I has a concrete floor with carpet over it, and although the floor isn’t 100% totally level, as our house was built in 1940, it’s pretty darn close to it. All the other rooms in the house have carpeted wood floors and when anyone walks through the house, vibrations from the footsteps can go through the tanks and cause stress to the fish. So, this makes it the best room to have the majority of our tanks in; some of which are already there. Plus, it’ll get a much needed spring cleaning, so please excuse the mess

Below are pictures of the room as it is as well as a simple plan-view diagram of the room and how the tanks will be laid out when done.

Today I got three cabinets - that had been down there 'waiting' to be put up in the bathroom for the wife - done.

I also took down the top wire shelving that was on the right side of the room and put it up over the washer/dryer/water heater and vacuumed up the carpet on that side of the room.

The missus was very pleased with the shelving relocation - not sure why since I do 99% of the laundry

Not bad for an old geezer

you're really detailed harley, not to mention thorough, I guess you have to be in the case of aquariums. Keep up the good work and keep us posted, its good to hear positive reports from other aquarists.

It's a standstill at the moment as I sprained my left ankle the other day coming off a ladder but the swelling has gone down and I'm hoping I'll be able to put more weight on it by Monday.

Fingers crossed

Hope you start to feel better, but I have to ask if you think the washer/dryer will make a lot of noise that may stress the fish in the room. Not trying to bring you down or anything just making sure you have everything planned out for the safety of the fish.

Hey not a problem with asking the question. That was actually a question my wife asked when we first talked about it.

To answer your question though, no, it will not bother them. With the floor being concrete and the tanks not being beside the washer/dryer I'm glad to say the fish won't be affected.

Noise and vibrations in the rest of the house are why I want all the tanks in the Fish Room and right now, 99% of the tanks are already there ; I just have to move the 30g but my Pearl/Red betta will be staying in my stepson's bedroom.

I also have to figure out how I'm going to repair the free 55g I got.

Yup, previous owner broke the plastic center brace, then screwed a length of timber as a quick fix. Have a look for yourself

I'm debating several ideas to remedy the quick fix.

That looks like quite an interesting project! I wish I had a room dedicated to fish! Please keep us posted as to how it comes out. Do you already have your 450 gallon set up? What do you have in it?

No Kate, the 450g is not up yet. It actually a different project that'll be started once I get the room cleared out.

If you want to you can read about it here

Swelling on ankle has gone down a lot now and today I put a little more weight on it ... err ... ouch! Still have to move gingerly but might be able to resume work on the laundry room conversion (light stuff) this weekend.

I think as long as I'm careful not to aggravate it I can get that far wall cleared.

[sigh]

That's cool you should put a couch in there. What are you going to do with a 450 gallon? Saltwater reef? Please show a stocking list for that.

Actually I'm looking at putting two recliners in there.

The 450g was originally going to be a 675g saltwater reef tank but that changed to becoming a 450g African cichlid tank. Futher details on that is in the DIY section. (HarleyMan's Big Marine Project)

Tank stock is not 100% decided but might include
  • Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor victoriae (hoping I guy that has some will allow me to buy some from him)
  • Paralabidochromis sp - Mwanda Gulf rock cichlids (if I can find some)
