Why no Danio roseus in the US?

I have been looking everywhere for some Danio roseus (a.k.a. rose danio, rosy danio, and purple passion danio). They seem to be the most gorgeous of the danios. I know that they are fairly new, but I see a fair number of sellers in the UK and other places (e.g. Malaysia).

Why has no one imported this beautiful fish yet?!? It makes me want to open my own LFS.

Your LFS may be able to order them for you . I had some about two years ago and yes they are gorgeous. There just isn't a big demand for other than the ordinary danios so many stores don't stock them. But yes they can be found in the US
Choprae and Kerrii are also very nice.

Thanks for the information, Carol. It is nice to meet someone who has had them, and can confirm that they're good-looking fish.

I have already tried local fish stores. I guess I will have to wait. I am just amazed that even independent mail-order sellers I see on places like aquabid seem not to carry them. There is a listing at thatpetplace.com, but they are always out of stock.

Regarding your comment about demand: if I ran a fish store I would try to carry the most interesting fish I could find. The fish stores here all carry almost exactly the same stuff. For freshwater tropical, about as exotic as they get is to carry some neon tetras (those are actually rare around here).

I would think stocking a beautiful, interesting fish would be a no-brainer. For instance, f someone walked into my store asking after zebra danios, I could say, "Sorry, I don't have any of those, but I do have these pretty longfin blues. Have you seen our pearl danios, or the unusual 'purple passion' danio?" (Nothing against zebras.) Similarly, I never see any blue angels, longfin corys, or much of anything else of interest at my local stores. They need variety.

I totally agree with you! The LFS we used is in Chattanooga, Tn and the fella that runs it loves providing the old stand bys as well as fish not seen too much and was always willing to order if he needed to. We have since moved to another state and don't have a store like that
I had a 55g loach tank set up with Danio roseus, choprae(is orange) and kerrii(turquoise danio) as dither fish. It was really cool looking.

On the topic of variety in stores I was chatting with the fish person in petland and he said that he doesn't have a problem carrying the oddball type fish but they never sell. People in my area mostly just want to by the standards apparently.

Evidently that's what most of the pet stores hear and they are in business to make money. still wish they had a little leeway to stock a few diffeerent things.

Thanks, peeps. I will post pics after they have settled in. I may just try to breed them so I can donate some to a local store.
