new tank mates

i have a 10g with 5 zebra danios in it, and the lot happens to be messy eaters. so i thought maybe a cory or two would solve the problem. but then just the zebra danios occupying the tank is almost at its max bioload. so just some input on the idea of a pair of cories in a 10g with 5 zebra danios already in it.

Re: new tank mates

I think it might be too much for your tank. How often are you feeding, and what do you feed them? How often do you do a water change?

Re: new tank mates

Hi, Have you considered some Ghost Shrimp? They get 1 1/2", excellent clean up crew, and put little to nothing on the bio-load of your tank. I don't think the Danios would hurt them, but I could be wrong. They only cost $0.36 here, so no big loss if the danios do kill them. You could easily put 10 in there safetly. They will eat anything, but not much Algae if any. Is your tank cycled? Cories would definatly put too much bio-load on that tank with the Danios already in it. Brianna

Re: new tank mates

Though the shrimp might be a better way to go bio-load wise, it "could" be possible for 2 Cory's to be OK in the tank. Being mainly bottom dwellers they wouldn't cause any cramping stress to the Danios. Also Cory's aren't nearly the mess makers that Pleco's and other catfish sometimes tend to be. You would have to get 2 (1 would be too lonely most likely) and that would mean that you would eventually be about 4"-5" overstocked (being most Cory's get to be 2"-2.5"). But if you were careful to test your water every week and adjust with either more frequent water changes or larger water changes weekly, then it "could" be done. Just understand that you are at the recommended max bio-load right now and adding anything to the tank means more upkeep of the tank. So it's up to you and your schedule, but anything is possible. You would probably be better off just feeding the Danios a bit less or slower, i.e. feed them 1/3 of what you normally feed them and give them enough time to eat all of that, then add the next 1/3 and let them finish that and then add the last bit. Then there shouldn't be any (or all that much) falling to the bottom of the tank.

honestly, i'm not sure.. they could ignore the shrimp completely or put on bibs and break out the dinnerware.
