Cory died :/

Yesterday, I bought a Cory from my LFS and unfortunately it has since died during the night. He seemed to be doing fine all of yesterday, so I'm wondering what ciuldve gone wrong. When I found him dead this morning, he seemed to have what looked like internal bleeding on one of his sides, the other looks normal. I was wondering what mightve caused his death as well as what the red patch is. I currently have an algae problem in my tank that I'm working on controlling(water's green). The other fish in my tank include guppies (1adult and many fry), an adolescent Molly, Chinese algae eater, pond snails and an apple snail. I'll post a picture of the Cory shortly if I can. (I do not know my water parameters.)

It's hard to say what could have caused it to die, without more information. Finding out your water parameters would be a great first step. You said you're "working on controlling" green water... what are you doing to control it?

As for the red patch, that could just be pooled blood. When the fish dies and its heart stops pumping blood around the body, the blood often pools in one location (usually either the lowest point on the body or, if it was stuck to a filter intake, the side against the filter).

Hello & Welcome to FishLore! I am sorry you lost him.

CAE's can be aggressive and it may have been him that attacked your little Cory. You may want to find a new home for the CAE. IMO

Ottos are a good algae eatter, a schooling fish but are sensitive to water conditions. There is also a few algae eatting shrimps, Cherry Shrimp and Amano Shrimp.

As for your green water, the cause can be high nutrients, overstocked, overfeeding, direct sunlight, and lack of water changes. It also can be all those things together. Is your tank getting direct sunlight?

Good luck!

in regards to the algae problem, I bought the CAE to help stem it somewhat, and have been doing partial water changes every other day ever since. I also blacked out my aquarium so the algae wouldn't receive any light to help stop them from photosynthesizing. I also have my tank semi close to one of my windows, so I'm sure that was probably what initially started the problem. I have since covered the window so it won't let light in.

I did notice the CAE and my adult guppy circling each other when I first introduced the CAE, but it didn't look like aggressive behavior, they merely looked like they were inspecting each other. Ever since that, I haven't seen the CAE exhibit any aggressive behavior, or even interacting with the other fish for the most part.

With the Cory having died, I'm not too sure it's because of poor water quality (though I obviously can't be sure of that as I don't have a test kit[broke college student ]). My reasoning behind that would be because of the guppy fry. I figure if they water quality were to be below standard, they would be the most sensitive to this change as they're not at all old. However, I'm in the process of doing a water change right now, so hopefully that will help with whatever's going on with my tank.

welcome to fishlore!!! wish it was under different circumstances tho
aww poor lil guy..im sorry for your loss...it looks like an ammonia issue to me ammonia will cause blood vessels to burst in fish ....maybe you can just pick up an API ammonia and nitrite tester? not too expensive for those ...and assume nitrates are being kept under control with weekly water changes are good..

Poor lil guy. If you just got him is it possible he was already sick at the store? And what about pH difference between your water and what he was in before? I don't really know enough to help, but just trying to throw in a few possibilities.

did you float the bag in the tank for half hour or so.
so the fish can accumulate to your water parameters.
CAE's can get aggressive you would be better off getting a otto catfish or some type of shrimp.
Im not sure about the red spot but you should get a test kit to monitor ammonia and nitrate lvls

Hi James,

Welcome to Fishlore! I would kindly have to agree with Shawnie on the ammonia poisoning. It would really be good if you can find out your water parameters one way or another to find the true cause and to prevent anything else to happen to your other fish. We don't want anymore deaths... Great info and advice from other members too! Hope you can keep us updated. Good luck!

Hello JamesL. Sorry to hear you lost your Cory. Along with the possibility of ammonia issues with it being such a new fish it could have been ill when you purchased it. How did you acclimate your fish into the aquarium? There could have been pH differences, temperature differences. Stress is a major factor in a fishes health. Maybe he just couldn't handle the stress of being moved from the fish store to your tank.

I agree on getting the API (liquid) Ammonia Tester. They are sold in singles as stated above.

Algae: Aquarium Algae Control this may help with your algae issues.

A water change (30 to 50%) is always a good place to start. If you have a water conditioner to detox the ammonia (just in case) I suggest using it too.
I hope you're remaining fish are all ok.
