Do all cory's school? i have 5 albino corys and they are very active but don't school and kindof make the tank look messy so to speak... Are they blind?
Corys are really hard to pair up if you are trying to breed them. They need to be in groups of 6 or 8 when you buy them and make sure you get them in the same place at the same time. If not they won't get together as well. Hope this help.
I have 2 bronze corys and they didn't school but they have started to school now.( I know u r supposed to have atleast 4 but I bought 4 and 2 died from an ICH outbreak) my corys love to race back and forth along my walls of my tank and they never realy go on the bottom except when I drop in dafinia that drops to the bottom
Schooling is often a defense mechanism... if they're not schooling, they may just feel safe in their environment.
The only time my cories school were when I first added them to the tank, or when I'm near the tank and move quickly enough to startle them. Otherwise, they just kind of do their own thing, sometimes near each other and sometimes not.
My "school" of cories split themselves up into two or three groups at night, then come together for the day to sleep in their cave. All depends on their personalities, I think. =]
Cories aren't full schoolers. If they feel threatened, or if the mood strikes them, they may move as one, but their communities are more loose than a proper school. They're kind of like guppies. Guppies like being in groups, but they don't school, really. Right now, my guppies are spread out across the tank, each exploring his/her own thing.
As others have said, cories don't school often. I've seen mine school a few times, and I've noticed that they will swim in formation at roughly the same time of day for several days, following the dominant member of the group. I have no idea why they do it though. They certainly didn't seem stressed.
And I may be biased in saying they followed the dominant member. My experienced with schooling fish is limited to danios, and I'm certain that their schooling is based on their heirarchy, as I can identify who is dominant to who based on their formation from day to day, in which there is almost complete uniformity: large gold danio at top of school, runt blue danio at bottom.
I have two cories and they don't have anything to do with each other, but one of my cories "schools" with my platies. He follows them everywhere and does everything they do. It's really funny to watch because he's half their size and doesn't look anything like them. My other cory just hangs out by himself and acts like he knows what species he is.
Getting a few more will help, IMO. While they dont school like tetras, they are still schooling fish. Schooling primarily happens while they are foraging, which ought to happen regularly, not just at feeding time. They won't if there aren't enough of them, the tank is too small, or they're over fed.
