Hi All,
I've seen a few threads to this effect lately so I thought I'd share my cory spawning story as well.
About a year and a half ago I picked up 3 peppered cory cats from petsmart after I had finished cycling my new 20g long tank. They turned out to be 3 males and thankfully were healthy. Since then they've been great, even going strong through two moves.
A few months ago I decided they should have a little company and picked up a small female at a local store I like. She grew pretty quickly and soon after some conditioning with hearty foods she looked ready to go. I did a few cool water changes, and although I didn't catch the eggs soon enough to remove them, during the next
water change I found a small baby survivor. My tank is full of plants, especially java moss so I decided to leave him in there. It's been over a month now, and he's growing fast! I was cautious about posting about his success but hopefully it's been long enough now that he is stable and will continue doing well.
Hopefully I'll be able to snap a picture of him soon, though I'm pretty bad at it so who knows. It's possible there's more than one baby in there, but i don't want to rip up the tank too much while looking. My red cherry shrimp have recently been breeding heavily as well, so I have to be extra careful messing around in the tank.
I thought I'd share because corys are my favorite and I'm really happy to have a little survivor!
Just a little note on food for any interested. I added shrimp pellets to their diet around when I got the female, and they seem to take to it well. Though to be honest they seem super eager eaters no matter if its sinking wafers or flake food.
I have a
powerhead filter, but I slipped some pantyhose over the intake to prevent cory and RCS babies from being sucked in and it has worked well. It just needs some adjusting every so often to keep the current going strong.
Please excuse my long post, but breeding has been even more fun/interesting than I thought. My next goal is to get my pygmy cory cats in the 10g to start breeding!
