Do Cories Eat Diatoms?

I know Otto's and CAE's eat Diatoms, but do Cories? Since we've moved our CAE's to our 55g our 29g community has started to develop a brown film on everything. We've been planning on adding cories, but if they don't eat diatoms then that really wouldn't be a prudent course of action.

Most excellent! Thanks Shawnie. I read a few places that they didn't so the opinions seemed a little divided.

Well actually, maybe I would have had more diatoms and they are eating it... but just left some behind.

hmm, that's interesting, my cories have never tried to eat algae but my mollie certainly has and my snails as well

Well we got 5 emerald green cories today at Petsmart. They were the most expensive, but they were in the worst shape than all their other cories and I felt bad. I just had to get them all and give them a good home. I really hope they like diatoms. lol

EDIT: Oh no! I just discovered that Emerald Cories like cooler water! Our tanks stay around 76-78 degrees. What have I done

I kinda assumed all Cories were in the same range of water params, but a lot of sites state 72 as a max temp for the Emeralds, and 79 as a max temp for other varieties. They do seem to be doing great though. They're swimming around actively cleaning everything. I actually think they all might make it. I'll post pictures soon.

Those little guys are cute!

I used to be a betta addict.

Then I became cross addicted to bettas/corys.

They're still really perky. I'm kinda worried about their torn up fins, to me they look tattered not rotten, almost as if they were nipped. They were in with a whole bunch of Gold Skirt Tetras and Red Minor Tetras...dunno if those are nippers or not. I'm hoping they will heal without having to be treated with meds.

From the way they looked in the store I never understood why people liked cories. But now I understand, they're so fun to watch.

you can just add some stress coat to help with the fins, other than that the only thing i'd give them is pristine water conditions generally if it isn't actually fin rot the fins will heal themselves given good water, the stress coat is just a little boost
