I just got three emerald cories. What is their "normal" behavior? Do they like "play dead"?

If by playing dead, you mean just laying on the substrate, yes they do that sometimes. But they should also swim around some.

I don't know about cories but it's most likely your ammonia making them act strangely. Follow the advice given in your other thread about Safe Start.

Your ammonia is at a toxic level, even a 50% water change would only cut it in 1/2.
If I were you, I'd do 50% and 50% later tonight.
