Little pygmy corys, want to make them happy

I have some new pygmy corys, that are still pretty little, about 1/2 inch. I want to make sure they get fed right and any other needs are taken care of. I have a lot of plants and hiding places so that should be covered. I'm not sure about food. I don't put any extra food in my tank so there is very little waste. Otherwise my betta girls would eat too much and get sick. So all my other fish are pretty much hand fed but this isn't going to work for these pygmys. This is their first night and I dropped a shrimp pellet but the platys ate it. So I took some shrimp flakes and ground them into powder with the idea that anything that small can only be ate by the little ones, and they did seem to swarm around the debris floating in the water, whether or not they were eating it I couldn't tell. But I don't really want to cloud my tank with food that I'm not even sure if it is being eaten. I have Fluorite substrate with some rounded gravel mixed in, are they likely to find something pushed just under the surface? I do this with my big cory, but not sure if this would work with these pygmys. Especially since they spend most of their time away from the bottom of the tank. Any suggestions would be appreciated, and I would like to know if their is anything they need that I may not have considered.

Try feeding them after the lights go out. Shrimp pellets are great for them. They will also eat any bloodworms that happen to make it to the bottom of the tank

IMO, after having examined my own Flourite substrate, I think it's way too sharp and jagged for corys. They need smooth rounded gravel, or sand so as not to damage the delicate barbels and mouthparts.

I have never had problems with Fluorite and cories, or with betta fins. Not being made of rock it isn't all that hard and it is light. This may be different with the pygmys since the profiles suggest sand as the preferred substrate rather than any kind of gravel.
