cory staying at the surface
I 've had two albino corydoras ( jack and jill) for about five years now, and just recently moved them to my new 55 gallon. They've never been happier, especially since i added sand for them to play in. Their favorite past time is to unearth my buried banjo catfish; its like hide and seek...lol They have actually paired off and do everything together. I thought since i have the room that i might get them a couple friends, so i brought home two tiny albino corydoras. I am just a little concerned about the one, because he spends a lot of his time at the surface. I know they have a labyrinth organ, but he is spending the majority of his time in the upper part of my tank. Should i be worried? He looks quite healthy other than this. His fins are not closed and he is quite active.

Actually corys don't have a labyrinth organ. They do occasionally take little gulps of air and process it down their gut, absorb what they want and expell the excess out their anus. Heres two cute threads you might enjoy
Do fish fart?

I would suggest you quarantine fish before adding them to your main tank, some times they come in with illnesses that are not immediately apparent.
Now does your cory eat? or swim around some or just hang out at the top all the time?
He may have also learned that food floats on the surface and come up there to eat. I had an albino that learned the other fish got food before he did and would come to the top to eat then go to the bottom and wait for wafers LOL silly fish

really? i didnt know they didn't have a labyrinth organ! I guess thats why you dont trust everything you read on the internet..lol. He appears to be fine other than the fact that he sits at the top blowing bubbles. He was eating fine and soon figured out where the wafer was, and that he needed to eat before the fish equivalent of locusts got there..silver dollars..lol.

Sounds like a learned behaviour to me Just keep an eye on him.

i think you were right, it was a learned behavior, perhaps for food. Now that he realizes that he he gets an algae wafer, and they sink, i haven't seen him stay towards the surface. I guess they're quick learners!

Glad to hear he's alright. I think needing more oxygen in the water wasn't an issue, but they do love to play in the bubbles if you don't already have air bubbles in the tank.

no actually i dont have, an aerator in the tank, but i've been thinking of adding one. Mine, get their kicks from bumping into the other fish, especially my banjo catfish. They act like he doesn't exist at all.

Heh -- my panda corys don't care who's in their way. They just plow through. More than once I've seen one of the platys or loaches get bonked on the head from a cory coming down from above.

I have two spotted cory's who love to sit on the fake plants I let float around at the top of the tank... I have no idea if it's normal but they look awfully cute.

My two baby cories are doing fine now, and have become totally accustomed to the tank. Is it normal though that they don't "mingle" with the grown ups? my two grown ups are quite the couple, but really don't bother with the others.

Corys tend to shoal more than school anyway.
