Most catfish/plecs don't like salt. They don't come from a salty environment and salt is an irritant and can cause fish to produce more slime coat.

Also, most catfish don't have scales, so their skin is less protected against the irritating effects of salt than scaled fish.

I thought that adding a teaspoon or two (depending on the size of the tank) would be beneficial if you suspect a fish is getting sick, and that the extra slime coat is a good thing.... am i wrong?

I've been told a little salt is a good medication but I have never used it myself. It's possible to trap bacteria and parasites under that extra slime coat the salt causes the fish to produce.
Keeping the water really clean, doing water changes regularly, not over feeding, not overstocking and quarantining new fish will go a long way toward not having sick fish.

i think it would have to be a VERY desperate situation for me to consider using aquarium salt on corys.. it may just be me, but i'd feel like i was pouring acid on them.

I've always put a tablespoon of aquarium salt per 10 gallons in my tank, simply because that was what was recommended to me years ago when I started out and I didn't know any better until I came here. My Cory's are 4 years old and my Common Pleco is almost 9. Never seemed to bother them much.

I agree with Butterfly. We've never used it in any of our tanks, and definately would never use it with catfish of any kind. Unless I could read a fish' mind I would never knowingly do something that I thought had the possibility to be harmful to the fish.
