Corys are much happier with their own kind.
The more the merrier!

Plus it's fun to watch them together.

Yep, I'd totally second that. I'd say try to get as many as your tank will sustain comfortably.

The females are smaller than the males; that's the only real way I know of to tell the difference. I have two spotted cories in my 10g tank, and will probably add a 3rd when I get back from vacation later this month. Cories don't carry a big bioload, so if your water conditions are really good, and you do regular water changes, you can usually squeeze another one or two into a tank without risk of serious overcrowding.

When I get my 56g going, I'm going to have 6-10 of these little delights (probably 2 schools of different types).

Do you have an airstone in your tank? Mine love to 'ride the bubbles' -- they get right on top of the stone, and then ride the bubbles almost to the top. Swim back down and repeat. It's a riot to watch.

Actually the females tend to be larger. When fully mature the females are fatter when seen from above, and in some species they may be longer too. However if you are buying juveniles there is no way to sex them.

If you can get at least 3 Cories. They are much happier that way.
