Can I keep a pair of convicts in a 20 long or should I go bigger?

You might just be able to keep a pair in there but I think a Larger tank would be better.

A 20 long is perfect for one pair of breeding convicts. I even have one of my pairs in a 20h.

Don't forget plenty of caves and hiding places and line-of-sight break ups. They will argue amongst themselves.

Thanks. Do I need anything special as far as gravel or is pebble gravel ok?

Nothing special needed. Pebble or regular gravel is fine. They'll move it around to make barriers when they nest.
