Two Males or Two Females?

So I have been considering redoing my 29g tall tank (in the future) with two convicts. I think the fish are really beautiful and fun to watch. Unfortunately I won't have anything to do with hundreds of fry. I was wondering if either two males or two females would be able to be kept together? If so, which pairing is better? If doing either of these is not wise please let me know that as well!

Thanks!

Hmm I'm not sure. But I would go two females. I have enough male animals in the house lol. Only one female out of 6 animals....

cons like a horizontal swimspace to be able to claim their own territories...one con can go in a 29g tall, but I wouldnt put 2 .....2 males will probably kill eachother and 2 females will still spawn and kill either eachother or anything else you might put in the tank

I have a male and a female convict. I just let them have babies and let survival of the fittest play its role. It might sound unpleasant but one may survive out of a batch or two. Most of the time the eggs get eaten by other fish in my tank.
I guess its like when you have dogs... two females will try to assert their dominance over each other.( from my experience) I would just do a male and female, so they don't stress each other out.

a m/f combo in that size tank, will not allow for other fish in the tank...but if the OP only wants the pair, thats great

I had a pair in a 20 gal. - and trust me FRY SURVIVED. They were the only fish in there, and I had about 100 fry I took to my LFS at one point. They're now in my 150, where the fry gets eaten.
If you get a pair, you'll get fry. Cichlids are very protective, and even water changes become a challenge.

hmm, very interesting, if you get them as fry you have a better chance on them not killing each other in the tank, i would recommend two females over the males. The males get very dominating and even if they grew up together once at a certain age them will probably kill each other. Depends on other fish they are with also, if with similar small cichlids..

I'd say two females as a general rule. They're less likely to fight, and they'll only have one round of eggs and then you'll be done.

I wasn't planning on putting any other fish in the tank with the convicts. I know most cichlids shouldn't be kept in a 29g tank.

If I was going to do just one convict, are there other fish I could put with him/her in the 29g tank? I would feel bad having only one convict all by himself in the tank, I know cichlids seem to be pretty social.

Ideally I would love to get a larger tank, but unfortunately I can't afford one and do not have the space for one, and I may never have the ability to get a larger one.

In a 29g tank, you can keep one convict with a rainbow cichlid. I tried keeping two rainbow cichlids in a 29g and I didn't feel they had enough room, so IMO, one rainbow and a convict would be perfect stocking.
