male or female

I have 2 cons in my tank. both are from different stores because some members said that if I buy from the same store that I could get inbreeding. the first night they chased each other around the tank nipping at the fins. now they swim around together and seem to be doing fine.

I was wondering first if I have a male and a female and second how long it will take them to breed. I don't want to rush them so if it will take some time that is ok.

the first picture is of what i believe is the female and the rest are the same male from different angles.

The first pic is a female who looks like she's in breeding mode and the other three pics are male. Once she goes into breeding mode, he'll follow right behind her

I think you have a m/f pair...and they will breed when they are good & ready.

Mine had free-swimming fry today. They're right around 2". I think they're almost 6 months old.

should i be worried that the male is lighter? his stripes are gray. almost like they are fading.

Yup amanda and BB have ya covered! My male con looks just like your boy... only like 3 inches bigger
its normal for them to have different colors, they are very colorful and their color changes based on their mood

i have what i believe is a 4 month old female and she is about an inch and a half, so they do grow pretty quickly. i think BB has picture records on growth, but am unsure LOL

yeah i was just wondering if it was a problem because i tried to breed cons last year and it didn't go well. the male and female just hid all the time and the male was the same color as this one i have now. back then i never tested my water so i probably had a problem there. anyway thanks for the response.

No, he'll darken up soon enough. That's what two of my males look like any time they're not spawning. The picture I posted for you of the pair, they were in spawning mode at the time.

I've got two-month olds in a tank. I'll try to get some pics and post them some time over the next few days.

Mods-I apologize for the back to back posts.

I was unable to get pics-they wouldn't come up so I did vids instead. The first vid is my spawn from early September. The 2nd vid is my free-swimming fry I pulled from their mother's yesterday. You can normally leave the fry with the parents so they can raise them, I just take most of the fry to feed my JD's.

I hope these help you.

Okay, now I'm really going to get in trouble. The 2nd vid wouldn't post, so now it's a back-to-back-to-back post. Sorry mods

I think over 100. It was two spawns. I pulled them from two different females. There's probably another 20 with the females that I didn't pull so they wouldn't breed again right away.
