Convicts can live happily on their own, its going to be mean either way

, they're nasty little fish; when I first got my female, she wiped out an entire tank of about 10-15 fish, including an oscar 3 times her size; if you dont want them to breed then definitely dont get pair, they do breed really easily. Im not sure how well two of the same sex would be (it should be fine though) but if thats a route you choose to go, take Bolivianbaby's advice and introduce them into the tank together so one wont establish their territory and see the other as an intruder.
